Fess up... do you! Are you the boss and tell them what to do... or are you the one that begs and pleases?

I may have said a few words to them from time to time.

I quote scripture to them “the plant that does not produce fruit shall be ripped up”

Yes and my husband finds it hysterical. I don't even realize that I am doing it. 'oh look at you pretty one' 'come on you can do it' 'sorry gotta lift your skirts to find the beans' Total utter nonsense but words just dribble out of my mouth in the garden.

Having heard it is a good idea to talk to them, I don't.

I talk more to myself, than to my plants but do occasionally say something admiring or encouraging to them. And most likely to be using bad language to the pests that attack them.

^ What she said. When I see leaf-footed bugs I tell them to stay where they are because I'm going to go get something "special" for them.

Does cursing count? I did that while threatening a Wisteria vine with an ax. Had it for at least 10 years without seeing a single bloom. It worked, the very next year it grudgingly spit out 3. I must have scared the heck out of it as every year after it had more and more beautiful racemes.

I love all the posts on this thread! Every one came with a smile.
I tell all my veggies how much I love them, how proud I am of them, how beautiful they are. Sometimes I sing to seeds before they germinate. I warn the outdoor ones of inclement weather.
I had a long talk with every one of them, before Irma. It was sad, I cried some, not a lot, but there were definitely tears. I told them I loved them all, and to do the best they could through the wind. I encouraged all of them to put up the best fight. The okra laid down, but two pepper plants fought hard and still had peppers until the first week of January.

More talking to myself, things like "What the he## am I gonna do about this?" or "I thought I just harvested all of those yesterday!" or "I can't wait until I get inside to try this." or "I don't think any of these are going to make it inside."

I only talk to the plants I love, and very seldom. And only to say "I love you".

When I read this post I heard this Stevie Wonder song: playing in my mind. So, I thought I'd share the experience with the rest of you.

some people say that math is the universal language, I tend to think that they have missed something big, telepathy seems to be the universal language as far as I can tell. I try it with the plants all the time, a mind has to be pretty empty to here them, and sometimes it sure seems like it works. most of the time I ask them to do what I am trying to breed them to be doing. (expect a generational delay to see if it works) the deal I try to make with them is that I will spread them all over the world if they do what we humans are looking for. the weeds never take the offer, but then I am pretty sure that the weeds are weeds because they have never tried to work with the humans.

Oh, I talk to my plants. I think I talk more to seeds as they're going in the dirt though- encouraging them to come out of their shells and come out to play! I also actually do quote scripture to my plants as well. As seedlings I encourage them to go forth and multiply, as well as other verses about multiplying the harvest. One year I experimented with isolating tomato plants in two different sunny windows. One plant I never spoke to- if I did speak to it, I said unkind things, like how ugly it was and how I thought it was going to die an early death. That plant grew to be about three feet tall and was sparse in fruit. The tomatoes in the second window, I praised daily. I encouraged them to continue doing such a great job growing and to produce an abundance of fruit. And they did! They grew all the way to the ceiling and had truss after truss of cherry tomatoes on them. I'd like to try it again, because there were other variables that could have contributed to the stark differences between the two types of growth, but I don't really have a way to isolate where I am now, and I daren't allow any negative words to come in contact with anything I want growing. ETA: This old blog post has pictures of the tomato plants.

On the other hand, the cats... definitely.
