Do you have a secret craving at night for not so good for you food? What is your favorite late night snack... it's not about all the sweets we crave... mine is potato chips... If they didn't want us snacking at night they wouldn't have put a light in the refrigerator...

CHOCOLATE!!!! Probably the most common vise, and supposedly chocolate is actually somewhat good for you - it's the sugar and butter it is almost always paired with that are the killers. I just make sure that I only make things that I have no willpower with, like brownies, to take somewhere else, or when a bunch of people will make them disappear, and I'll only eat a couple of them. If they are left in my house, I can hear them calling me from the next room...or even the freezer, if I try that!
I used to make Thai curries at least twice a week (meaning eating the leftovers for many other meals, often including breakfast, and sometimes eating it cold from the fridge, late at night! And with Thai foods, jasmine rice is an essential, which is like eating pure sugar, and I would buy it in 25 lb bags! I got off of that addiction when I went on my Indian food kick (with all those legumes) about 4 or 5 years ago, and lost over 40 lbs, without trying. It had to be that jasmine rice! I still treat myself with it, and a Thai curry, once in a while, but usually mix it with a neutral whole grain.
And, of course, another craving I have is capsaicin, but that is no secret! lol And it is supposedly good for me.

Pie, cake, etc, with ice cream. If I wake up in the middle of the night, probably have a donut.

I would say evening snack not really late night because I don't wake up and eat but anything like cake or cookies. I absolutely LOVE potato chips too daylilydude, which is why I only buy small bags of them away from home and almost never have a big bag at home.

Pudding in just about any incarnation. But it should still be warm from just being cooked.

Whatever I have. I just made a bag of peanut butter M&M's and almonds yestery.
If there is cake or pie, I have to really talk myself down cause I'll eat it.
Wife and I both like Ice Cream too.
My daytime munch is jerky, I buy it by the pound at Sam's.

I don't snack at night. Once I am done with dinner I am done with food for the day. But potato chips, the kettle cooked type, would be my snack of choice and some time it is, just not at night. AS a matter of fact, I intentionally don't buy potato chips because I know that if they are in the house, I'll find a reason to eat them.

I read in bed every night for a couple of hours and about midnight I tend to get up and have a snack. Many times it is toast and peanut butter and other times it is cereal with a cut up banana. Afternoons I will have mixed nuts, goldfish, cheetos and tortilla chips or potato chips all mixed together in a bowl to snack on while I read.
I love chocolate which I am trying to cut way back on and ice cream which doesn't like me any more. Many years ago the midnight snack of choice was a bowl of vanilla ice cream with hershey's chocolate.

Chocolate is what calls to me most! If the chocolate comes in sugary baked goods - such as cake, brownies, cookies, French Silk Pie, etc. - I have zero willpower...I eat big servings and too many of them. I like desserts with fruit, too, but given a choice I will go for the chocolate 99% of the time. But I have gradually worked my way up to enjoying 86% cacao dark chocolate (Ghirardelli brand). I can have a half-serving of that and get my chocolate fix for only 125 calories and just a few grams of sugar. Because it is so dark and intense, I nibble on it and am satisfied with that amount. I am rarely tempted to have more. I also have it shortly after dinner. I try to avoid snacking close to bedtime. If I do get the unbearable munchies later, I try to eat nuts. But every once in a while I go nuts and have huge dessert of cake, pie, brownies, cookies, or ice cream instead of the dark chocolate. If I could break that habit my waistline would shrink. I like savory snacks, too. Spicy Nacho Cheese Doritos is the real killer savory snack for me. If I have those around, I *will* eat them, and in massive quantities. So I generally don't buy them to avoid the temptation.

I try not to eat anything after supper, but if I have a craving I can't stop, I'll eat anything handy, even just a piece of bread and butter, or a banana smeared with peanut butter, or bowl of Cheerios. I usually don't keep sweet things or chips on hand because they are too big a temptation (except for a stash of Dove dark chocolate squares which I try to pass off for the health benefits of chocolate!)
And I suppose you all saw the new study of how the best way to lose weight is not to eat anything after 2 or 3PM in the afternoon because you don't want to sleep on a full stomach! Sigh. The theory being that calories from immediate digestion are used first, so you should be up and moving around after meals, and when you sleep, you can access your existing stored fat and lose a little weight at night instead of adding to it from the last meal. Makes perfect sense to me, but not sure I could stick to it. If I eat a big breakfast, I'm often not yet hungry by noon, but would be by 2PM which is a poor time of day for me to take the time to cook another big meal --enough to take me through to the next morning.

If we have chips and green onion dip in the house, my face is planted in the middle of them. Absolutely NO self control.

I like most sweets and love chocolate, but prefer a Tsp of extra crunchy peanut butter late at night.

I am not a night time snacker at all. Once dinner is over, I'm finished for the day. If dinner was lighter and I start feeling peckish, I brew up a cup of herbal tea and call it good.
BUT, in the afternoon all bets are off. I cannot make it from lunch to dinner without something. Lately I've been keeping dried fruit and nuts on hand for that, but I've been known to make up a big bowl of popcorn or crack open a bag of chips. However, if there is cake, cookie or brownie in the house forgetaboutit. You know how people say "I'm just here for the cake"? I really mean it. If there is cake in the house, I will be there somewhere between 3 and 4 pm with a cup of tea or coffee in hand.

but I've been known to make up a big bowl of popcorn or crack At first I was in awe of your eating habits UNTIL I read that . . . my brain just stopped and I was all WHOA DANG and I was feeling guilty about chips . . . then I continued reading and giggled myself silly. Sorry I been under the weather a bit today and trying to focus isn't a strong suit at the moment.

I found something else (well, it's not really something else, as it has chocolate!) that is totally addictive - English Toffee. I picked up a container @ Trader Joe's today, and that stuff is as good as what I make! This has dark chocolate and chopped pistachios as the coating. I have as much willpower with this as I do with brownies, so I took the container down to the basement, when I went down. I figure that, since I only go down there maybe once a day, given my lack of mobility, so I'll take a bite when I am down there, and it will last a lot longer!
This wouldn't work if I could walk normally - I could get down there any time it called me.

I admire all of you who can just eat dinner and then nothing at all until the next day. I know that it is really a good way to be but I will NEVER be one of those people so I just strive to have only ONE snack per evening and not just graze until bedtime. I try to make my snack something healthy like clemantines or whole grain toast, not cake or cookies but sometimes.......
