Kate gave me another bean! This is a Chestnut Flavored Bush Bean. Dan McMurry (grunt) gave Kate her start and these seeds are a grow out of it. She didn't give me a name, so research is needed.

Many thanks to aftermidnightAnnette was able to make contact with someone from the Dan McMurray memorial seed bank. Here is the answer they gave her. "Hello Annette - thanks for your interest. We love hearing from people who are heirloom vegetable growers. Chestnut Flavoured was in Dan's collection when we received his seeds in 2012. Unfortunately, we didn't grow this out for several reasons, but mainly because we couldn't find any information on it. We no longer have seeds of this variety." This is grim news indeed. If I'm unable to grow this out, this could become extinct. I have no clue on the age of this seed, so wish me luck. What you see above is the only seed I have of this variety.

I know that is stressful for you. Good luck with germinating them!

With that many seeds I am sure that at least a few will germinate and produce new seed for you. I am hopeful. If it were me I wouldn't plant them all at once in case there is some environmental disaster like a big flooding rain or something that drowns all of your seedlings. Save a few seeds in case you need to replant.

Laura_in_FL , brownrexx , aftermidnight You know what I find strange? A company that's supposed to be dedicated to saving and preserving seeds would simply not attempt a grow out because they couldn't find any information on it? Well Duh, it's freaking rare! That's why you can't find any information on it. OK, I'm off my soapbox now.

I thought that was a pretty strange thing for a seed bank to do as well!

aftermidnight Laura_in_FL, These are Bush Beans. I'm trying to get a game plan in place. I have 18 seeds. I'm thinking of dividing them up like this. Putting 11 in the freezer as back up. That leaves 7 beans. Planting 2 in a 5 gallon bucket and planting now. Then after I'm sure frost is over planting 5 in my raised bed. Ok, I know you're wondering why I'm thinking of planting 2 now? I was hoping to get a jump on the season. I'd be able to bring them inside in case of a cold snap and hopefully by getting a head start, I could get a set of beans before 100 degree days hit me. Do you have any suggestions? Is my plan flawed?

Seems fine to me, especially since you can bring in the beans that you plant now in case of a cold snap. Good luck! EDIT: Since you have so few seeds and they might be old, you might consider starting them indoors in controlled conditions and then transplanting them to the garden. Beans can be transplanted fine, if you're careful. Here's an informative thread on germinating old bean seeds: www.houzz.com/discussions/2004799/need-ideas-to-germinate-old-old-beans

I've never had them before! I'm curious about their taste. So am I. I do hope I can keep it going. To use football terms, I'm always scared to try and chunk a "Hail Mary" when I only have a few seeds.

Hey hairymooseknuckles, it's Bunkie from Idig, homegrown, etc... I just happened to find my little packet of Chestnut Flavored Bean seeds I got from Dan way back when today! I am planning on growing them out this year. Dan and I corresponded a lot back then and he told me a lot about this bean, but I can't find our correspondence?! Sorry!
I have maybe 16 seeds. Will plant ten and save the others for later.
I can't figure out how to post photos here, but will keep working on it. I remember this bean really impressed me from what Dan told me.
Sorry I've not been around much. Lost my hubs last August, and am

bunkie , Oh my gosh Bunkie, it is so good to hear from you again! I miss a lot of my friends from Idig. First let me tell you. I'm sorry to hear about your hubby. I would be lost without my wife. I don't get around too good anymore and I can't see very well. I'm ok though. Yes, please grow that bean if you can. I'm trying my best to wait a few days before I chance an early planting, but I have a place picked out for it. I do hope you will join us here more often if you can. It's really nice talking to you again!

Sorry, my post got cut off. Apparently I have batteries in my keyboard...who knew?!
Thanks about hubs. Slowly trying to get the farm up and running this spring.
Will definitely plant the Chestnut Flavored Beans. Maybe between us we can get a supply going again! I still have 1 and a half feet of snow in the gardens!!!
Still can't get an image going here. Will keep working on it. Will also try and be around more!
Glad to hear from you too! Hugs!

bunkie, It's been downright warm in my neck of the woods. It got to 87 last week and wife was not a happy camper. She likes winter and I like Summer! I used to like winter before I got older, but these days I prefer the sun. I'm doing my best to hold off planting, but everytime we check the 10 day forecast and you see nothing but sunshine, it's hard to wait!!!

Hi bunkie , I am a former idig member as well. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I can't even imagine how hard that must be.
Posting pictures is very easy here. Look at the bottom of the reply box and you will see add image to post. That will open a window and then you can click on browse from your computer and select an image to attach. It's very easy.
Or if you prefer you can use an off site image hosting site such as Flickr which is what I do. I post a lot of photos so I like having them all in one place for easy access.
It is also very easy once you get the hang of it. Here are instruction for how to use Flickr

Hi, bunkie. I am another former Idig member here, but it's been years since I was active there. I still remember your name, though. I just wanted to say that I am so sorry to hear that you lost your husband. It must have been a very difficult time for you - I hope things are looking up for you now.

bunkie, brownrexx, spike, Laura_in_FL,Me and Bunkie used to have fun. I remember once there was a bragging thread. Being the smart, bright fellow I am, I posted a picture of an Okra Pod that was about 16" with a caption that said "Now, this is how you grow Okra!" and Bunkie comes along and says something like "Dadgum you, Knuckles! You know your letting that go to seed!" I came back and said "Shsss Bunkie, these goofballs don't know that."

I came back and said "Shsss Bunkie, these goofballs don't know that." It's true, I never even saw an okra before last year!
