I trellis tomatoes and other upward growing plants on heavy duty stock panels - I have plenty of them recycled from old horse fence. A few beds still have my original system of an overhead 12 ft 2'x4' wired to steel posts from which tomato plants are suspended. Peppers are grown in the small tomato cages. Tomatoes grown in pots are placed along the old wooden fence line inside my deer fenced garden, and are in some fashion tied or cages wired to the old fence.

Nice gardens... september ! ~~~ Wooden stakes here for each plant... The 4' wide tomato beds get additional tall stakes in between the plants...anchoring the tomato stakes to them with twine, creating a strong mesh like support system for the stakes... Made a climbing bean trellis made of woven together manipulated bamboo poles and long branches from the fig tree prunings and some twine...

Hog wire and welded wire cages, plus bamboo tepees.
I intentionally planted some running bamboo so that i would have all the stakes I could use...

5' tall cages for tomatoes, which I anchor to the ground with posts otherwise they fall over. Some stakes for pepper plants. Really tall fence (two sections) wrapped around a post for cucumbers.

I use trellises for the Earthboxes in the tomato rows, and along one long edge of the raised beds. I like the flexibility of being able to use the same trellises for tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans in the summer, and peas in the winter.
I also have a few of the big Texas Tomato Cages that I have been using most recently with my 5 gallon bucket SIPs. But I can also use them with the Earthboxes that I just got to replace those buckets.
The pepper Earthboxes have cages made from Gurney's pea fences. (I bought them all when I had 50% off coupons.) These fences have hinges so they can fold for storage. As it turns out, the pea fences can also be folded into rectangles that are the perfect size to sit on an Earthbox. A couple of zip ties to hold the rectangle together is all you need. It's pure serendipity, but it looks like they were designed to work together! I do drive some stakes into the ground next to the box and zip tie the cages to the stakes for wind protection.
I also have some of those green plastic-coated metal stakes in various sizes, that I use for oddball items.

Heavy-duty tomato cages, cut off the top ring and put that end in the ground like a pyramid. That's for indeterminates. Determinates or dwarfs get simular but shorter cages.

I also use concrete reinforcement wire cages for tomatoes. For peppers, I use concrete reinforcement rod (rebar) and tie the pepper plants to the rebar. The tomato cone cages they sell at big box stores would do a much better job for the peppers if I could manage to find them on sale.

I favor the Florida Weave for my tomatoes- using twine and 5 foot T-Poles. But I also use tri-fold tomato cages that I un-fold and stretch out so three plants can utilize one cage for support. I need to replace some of those this year.
Pole beans get really sturdy 4 foot tomato cages with a bamboo tee-pee inside.
Cucumbers get six foot poles supporting a climbing net.
Pepper plants get small tomato cages or single poles for support.
I'm in search of an old wooden ladder for some winter squash this year, but I'm starting to think about just having DH build me something out of scraps.

Gone through a lot of different things for pole beans but now only use conduit for poles, a cork with a nail pushed in the end to hang lengths of jute, these are anchored to the ground by long staples made from coat hangers. I also have a few frames with plastic netting (the netting has wide spaces that you can get your hand through) and I have a few toppers hubby turned for me to use on the conduit poles, looping the jute over the top but that was a lot to ask when I starting growing 18 or so different varieties. The big one I use if I'm growing a variety I think I'll have trouble getting seed from, this one is attached to the top of the conduit with a thumb screw. This one will hold an umbrella to keep the rain off, works like a hot.... . Crazy lady I might be, but hey, what ever works Annette

aftermidnight, Do you happen to have any problems with the jute twine breaking. The jute twine sold here is weak, I can take a double loop and snap it in half. I'd like to find some strong stuff.

hairymooseknuckles, my jute twine kept breaking too so I bought some parachute cord on sale at Tractor Supply and it has lasted 2 years so far.

Go back to previous page, the three pictures I posted finally showed up, at first they were little blank boxes. A picture of some beans growing from a conduit pole, second picture is some of the toppers I used before I came up with the cork and nail idea, third picture is the umbrella using the big topper used with a thumb screw.
