When getting opinions on the taste, growth habit and so forth, do you rely on others opinions or do you just go for it?

I always pay attention to taste opinions on varieties but realize just how subjective those opinions can be. Every garden, every year, every taster grows every variety differently. Maybe not by much. If something gets good reviews by several different people, that may help decide. Mostly I just go for it.

Will take opinions into consideration, but if it strikes my fancy I'll try it anyway.

When buying online, I read the description of the new-to-me vegetable, then one or two descriptions about a vegetable that I already tried, and compare the views. If I agree with them I go ahead and buy the new-to-me variety. For other veggies, I mostly find myself in places where they are served (friends' houses, etc). If I like them I ask what the name of the variety is, then look for seeds.

Like paulf said, if a variety gets good reviews from several different people (preferably including some people in the Deep South), I am willing to give it a try. But I long ago learned that it might not grow the same or taste the same in my garden. And taste is subjective; usually I will at least like a variety that most other people like, but occasionally I run into a variety that is really popular but to me is just "meh." Like Black Cherry tomatoes. (I am going to don my asbestos suit now. )

Part one: YES! I want to hear how the plant grows, what it needs to flourish, production etc.
Part two: NO! When it comes to taste (mostly). I simply LOVE corn. If you give my son corn (even at age 35) he will vomit. Really hates corn. I simply LOVE salads. My husband would rather die than eat lettuce/tomatoes/cucumbers. (need to divorce him) So I am interested in other peoples opinion on taste, it doesn't effect my choice to grow or not. If that makes sense.

Like Black Cherry tomatoes. Trying them for the first time this year based on other's glowing recommendations.

Like Black Cherry tomatoes. Trying them for the first time this year based on other's glowing recommendations. Yes, that is always best! I'm not a fan, but my sister is -- so I have to start some for her every year and often end up keeping a plant for myself and then wonder why. So even in the same family, taste buds vary!

Most people really like Black Cherry tomatoes. Apparently I am the weirdo for not caring for them. Hope you enjoy yours!

No asbestos suit required, but Black Cherry has been the ONLY cherry I eat while I am in the garden. I am not a fan of cherry tomatoes so I grow one or two for my wife. Even she says."They are OK." Not exactly a ringing endorsement. For the people I grow for, BC has been the overwhelming favorite cherry.

Most people really like Black Cherry tomatoes. Hmmm... might be a southern thang as my wife said that they were alright but that she has had better?

Not a fan of cherry tomatoes, but I find that Black Cherry's flavor is not much like a cherry as it is like that of regular, old fashion tomato. It does not have the persistent, overwhelming sweetness that most modern cherry tomatoes seem to all have.

I usually just wing it, I have found quite often others opinions differ from mine so I like to find out for myself, some are losers, some are winners.

Do I rely on other's opinions? No. But I always give a listen to advice being offered and give it some consideration. Taste is highly subjective, but when I find someone who likes similar varieties as I do, I tend to grow their recommendations more often than not.

Mostly I am more than willing to listen and enjoy other's opinions on plants, then I go on my merry way and do what I want to do. Some folks seem to like the same or close to varieties as I do, and those may carry a tad bit more weight, but it still what I have room for, ambition to grow and eat, and what strikes my fancy.

How much that I listen to others depends on my opinion of them. I am polite about it but it is my property, money, and sweat. Besides, as i’ve told people, there’s going to be an experiment every year. The world doesn’t end because an experiment flops, it’s just something exes off of the list.

It does not have the persistent, overwhelming sweetness that most modern cherry tomatoes seem to all have. Yes, I'll add to that. They have a tougher skin Than some. When you plop it in your mouth and bite down, a rush of juice and seeds explode in your mouth, creating a happy burst of acidic, tart, slightly sweet flavor.
