My brother bought this for Mom at Christmas. A couple of weeks ago, 15 days to be exact, we set it up. I'm kinda impressed. I really wasn't expecting much, but stuff is growing. Lettuce really took off and basil did too, but you can't see it well in the pic due to lettuce. Tomatoes look healthy too. I can see it being real nice for greens and herbs. True I could build something cheaper, but I still really like it.

I received one of those for Christmas several years ago. I never opened the box. Really when buying a gift for somebody with a hobby, either ask first or pick something more generic. People with hobbies tend to have biases or be picky. Personally I was offended at the price per preseeded plug and in the fact that , at that time, you couldn't just use your own seed. Add to that I eventually had to tell the giver that I didn't use the gift after they kept asking.

ladymarmalade, mgulfcoastguy, I don't think I would cough up that much dough on one, but at the same time, I really like it. If I had one, I wouldn't buy their seed pods, I know how to to make them for 1/4 of what they cost. I've been considering making a kratky system to set out in the window just to tinker with.

In effect, it's a cloning "machine" under lights, one that can be built fairly cheaply and easily. Also good for cloning stuff like hard/soft wood things, i.e. roses. Handy item, the bigger ones.

Mom sent this picture. She had trimmed her lettuce and basil back twice now. Those Dadgum tomatoes look way better than mine!

I kept thinking about getting one of these but never did. I didn't like the idea of using their prepackaged seed. It's expensive and you are prey to whatever chemicals and Genetically Modified seed they are using. But the idea of having a thriving kitchen garden in my kitchen, especially now that we are considering a move to an apartment does appeal greatly to me.

Her plants look great. Are those micro tomatoes? Yes they were. She made a slew of tomatoes. She's growing parsley, basil, and a red rumpled lettuce right now. She loves this thing.

bluelacedredhead If you are interested in planting a hydroponic herb garden, let me know. A deep water culture (DWC) is cheaper, with less problems than an Aero system, which can have sprayers clog, and the water has to be replaced in both types, but more frequently in the aero garden. And I use things from my aquariums to keep them clean and aerated - a powerhead with a sponge filter attached, along with an air stone.

pepperhead212, bluelacedredhead, It couldn't be that hard to replicate. After all it's just a plastic rectangle, a water pump and a light source. 1. To me it looks like you would need either black plastic or a way to keep light away from your water. 2. Some type of Liquid Fertilizer 3. Light source. (The AG) uses multicolor lights. 4. A way to plant seeds. Sponge or Rockwool. 5. A cheap aquarium pump.

Sorry hairymooseknuckles, pepperhead212, I missed your last replies as we were away on a road trip. Thanks for the Suggestions. I'll take a look at Youtube for setup ideas. I'll look into it. Aquarium water = Liquid Fertilizer Best way to keep aquarium water recycled and grow the greenest of plants!

I think we will be looking into making our own system after Christmas.
