What is the first crop that you harvest as you start your gardening season for the year?

This year it was Semposai and Komatsuma. They were the first things planted. It was the first time I had tried them.

Asparagus closely followed by rhubarb. They are both perennial crops and are the first to appear in the spring.
I eagerly watch my asparagus bed for spears. Last year I picked my first one on April 10 but in 2016 it was not until April 20. They start out slow but really pick up when the weather warms up. By May I am picking enough for us to eat as much as we want and am freezing lots. We love asparagus.

Asparagus here as well. Of the seeds planted yearly it will be radishes.

Usually lettuce, and overwintered spinach if I remember to seed it in the fall and we have good snow cover.
Wish I could have asparagus, but have never been able to establish a decent bed.

Maybe spinach or some early greens. And strawberries.

My asparagus is really bad too, september, I don't know what got to it, but it's the fifth year and it's declining steadily. I only had a few asparagus the third year, like 20, and that was it. As soon as the weather allows, I am going to dismantle the bed.

Hmmm...there are plenty fall planted collards awaiting harvesting right now. After that will probably be lettuce, then green beans.

I always try to overwinter scallions, so they provide a burst of freshness before anything else is ready.

I'm eating them like crazy! They are so tasty! Look at knuckles2018 to see my harvest. Mom cooked 3 gallon zip lock bags of greens tonight for supper.

Glad to hear that you like those so much, hairymooseknuckles, and that they produced so well for you! Those Asian greens are always my first harvests.

My Egyptian Onions are always a reliable green onion for salads in the spring, as is my sorrel for soups. But I have to remember to put a chicken wire barrier over them as soon as the snow is gone, otherwise the deer get to them before I have the electric fence working for the summer.

I've been telling everyone I know about them. For the folks who haven't tried them, but eat collards, turnip and mustard greens. Semposai and Komatsuma do not have that harsh bitterness some greens can get. I left them to grow an extra week after they needed picked because we had to take an unexpected trip and they were still delicious.
