Do you wear a hat while gardening? If so... what kind? Or are you one that really should be wearing a helmet...

I know I should wear a hat out in the sun but there is something about hats. I just don't and never did unless I was playing baseball and it was part of the uniform. Here in farmerland, everyone seems to wear a baseball style hat but me. I have several kinds of hats but they hang on the hooks getting dusty.

I really need to switch to wearing wide brimmed hats when in the sun for hours, but like Paul, I dislike wearing hats!
Hats make my head feel sweaty and like it can't breathe, and I have a small head, so most hats slip down too far on my forehead and mashes down the top of my head. I have a stack of all kinds of beach or safari type hats with ventilation panels, but can't stand to wear them for long. I do always wear visors but I don't like tight ones - they give me a headache. What I do for my red neck is to tuck the ends of a bandana kerchief under the ear pieces of the visor so it hangs loose across the back of my neck. Looks weird, but who's watching? Well, only my neighbor lady if she spots me outside and comes over to chat.

An Adventure Hat graces my head when I’m in the garden. It covers my neck so there’s no chance of sunburn. I call it the 'dork hat'.

Kmart and Walmart sell baseball hats that are sized for women and come in bright colors like red, turquoise and pink. I never go out to my garden without wearing one of those. I am very light sensitive and the brim shades my eyes and keeps the sun off my face. A hat also keeps my hair from falling into my eyes which I like. A baseball hat does not shade my neck but I do wear sunscreen if I'm outside all day.

The last time I wore a hat I was on Active Duty. Normally if I am out in the garden or doing yard work I have on my headset and am listening to my music.

Nope. I have very long and very thick hair that I put up when I work in the garden. There is no room for a hat. Plus, I love the sunshine.

use to not be able to take a drop of sun or I would get sick and be in pain, but fixed that problem I do have lots of hats that block all the sun from having that issue. found out after I could go out in the sun again that I burn easy... so usually wear a wide brimmed hat and gloves if I can. when it gets hot (over 100F) it will be no hat, short sleeves, and an umbrella I have umbrella hats, and they work pretty well other than it is hard to walk through doors and the one gets uncomfortable after about 30 min. and the other one blows off with any wind at all.

I am trying to train myself to use hats more, especially when I am going to be outside in the heat of the day for a long time. In summer, the Florida sun is brutal. (I know the sun intensity is worse in the Desert Southwest, but it's bad enough here!) I do have a baseball-type cap, but my wide-brimmed "straw" hat is more comfortable to wear due to the ventilation, and it shades my face and neck better. Like ladymarmalade, I have long hair, but I do NOT put it all up to go work in the garden. I don't like the sweaty neck I get from keeping my hair down, but I hate getting a sunburn on the back of my neck, tops of my ears - and especially on the tops of my shoulders - even more. What I do instead is pull back a little hair from the upper sides of my head back and into a small ponytail or braid. That keeps hair from falling/blowing into my face while leaving most of my hair hanging down to protect me from sunburn. And the small braid or ponytail hanging down doesn't interfere with a hat if I'm wearing it.

I don't wear a hat late in the day, as it is shady back there, when I get home from work. If I am out there on Sundays or days off, I try to apply sunscreen, and I use a mesh sun helmet, which I recycle from work every season, when I get a new one. The old one is quite dirty by this time, and I like to start with a new, clean one for work, but that doesn't really matter in the garden! lol

I always wear a wide brimmed straw hat in the garden. I don't like having my head and face exposed to the sun, I burn easily and that's not good for me. I do however expose my arms and legs, but I can never, ever tan. I am just as pale at the end of the season as I am at the beginning.

Bb cap is insufficeient. I still get headaches. I like a straw hat. It helps immensely.

Unless it's early morning, or after sunset, if I'm outside for more than a minute, I wear as large a wide-brimmed straw hat as I can. To keep my head cool, sometimes I've cut out a disc in the crown to allow air circulation. But not usually since it's not that hot here.
I try to not get any unnecessary sun because many of my activities are outside, and for 12 months of the year.

I wear a hat when gardening to keep my almost bald head from getting sunburned. It is a cheap straw hat that is shaped somewhat like the hats golfers wear.

I don't like hats or gloves and it has always driven my Mom and especially my Uncle nuts! As a teen, I hauled hay without gloves and he would just bite his lip and mumble.
I don't like wearing watches, rings or any other crap either.
I can sing sing and dance, but I don't need pants. See, I'm just like you.

Me neither! We got married at a justice of the peace without wedding rings because neither of us cared to wear one. Will be 45 years next anniversary. I lost interest in wearing jewelry some time in my early '20's. I can appreciate design and workmanship on a nice piece, but have no desire to have or wear any.

I have long hair and always wear it up. there is no room for a hat on my head but I do wear a visor. one of those springy bands that just slip over your temples and sits there.
no jewelry either. we bought a house instead of wedding rings. I thought that was far more important than rings. If I need a ring to advertise my status I need to change my behavior....

I try to remember to grab my hat, either a wider brimmed straw or a BB cap, as I get headaches from intense light and also burn wickedly easy. When my hair was long, I would do a french braid as it was thick and move me up a full inch or more for fit with a fedora type hat, the french braid let me use which ever hat and keep my hair out of my face. Now, LOL, I cut it all off and am most happy to not have to fuss with it or the weight/hotness on my head.
