I noticed on a few of my seedling trays there was a little greenish mold on the surface of my potting mix... why was it there, and how do you keep from getting it, and most importantly... will it hurt anything?

Molds are not green so it is probably algae and it will not hurt anything. I sometimes see a little bit of that but never worry about it.

Happens in higher humidity conditions. Let the mix dry out a little more before watering. No matter what the algae, like brownrexx says, will not hurt.

I think it would be some kind of moss. If so, it's harmless.

Probably algae. The spores are everywhere in the air, and they grow whenever they find a consistently moist spot, especially if it's also warm. I see algae from time to time in my seedling trays. I've never seen it do any harm. It is unsightly, though. And if there is a lot of it, you might notice a "pond scum" smell or the top of the potting mix might feel a little slimy.
As was suggested above, try letting the seedling trays dry out a bit more between waterings.
