So the "orange" carrot was not the first color, the traditional colors were of purple, yellow, and white, but in the 17th century, a strain of carrot was developed that contained higher amounts of beta carotene hence the first orange carrot. Those that grow the different colors of carrots, do you do it because of taste or just because they look pretty to the eyes...

I grew them once because I thought that they were pretty but we thought that the orange ones tasted better so I didn't grow them again.
I ride horses regularly and they thought that they tasted good. No complaints.

I tried to grow purple ones once, but they didn't do well in my soil. However, now that I have my raised bed, there's no reason not to try again. Maybe this fall Knuckles will try.

I don't find much of a taste difference among most of the colored carrots.
One year, though, I grew a rare dark purple/almost black carrot and it DID taste different. It wasn't anywhere near as sweet as a regular carrot. It was also tougher and unpleasant to eat raw. Cooked up, it was amazing though. I ended up shredded them all and using them in a carrot relish- it was probably the best batch of that I'd ever made.

I only grow orange carrots. The others are probably fine, but I would get them confused with parsnips or other root vegetables. The other colors don't really interest me for now.

I grow the purples because they are pretty and different. Haven't found one yet that yields as well for me as orange carrots, unfortunately. I have heard that some of the yellows are pretty vigorous, so I may try one of them yet.

Grew the purple ones a few times. We are not in carrot country so it was not a real good comparison.
The story on orange carrots I read about was that the King of the Netherlands ordered his botanists to match the royal colors...orange, and still is orange...to every flower and vegetable they could. Carrots were the easiest vegetable and lots of orange flowers were developed. It was a nationalistic thing.

I favor the big fat orange winter storage carrot. I hardly notice the other colors, the other carrots are too skinny.

Aldi carries a bag of corored organic snack carrots and they are actually tasty. I love the colored carrots. I don't care what color one is I just want it to taste good.

I love rainbow carrots. The look so pretty. A bowl of diced rainbow carrots looks like a bowl of candy corn. I am not a fan of the purple ones as when you cook them, they make everything purple. I find that the white one, grow really big.
