Hey, Y'all! I'm from the southern edge of NE MS, near the Bama line. Roll Tide. I generally only grow tomatoes and hot peppers, although I do dabble in melons, squash, and garlic. I also have muscadines, table grapes, and figs. NJT looks like a very cool place! I look forward to interacting with y'all on a frequent basis!

Welcome to NJT! Being in Wisconsin most of my life, I've never had a muscadine. It seems they are a favorite of everyone who grows them.

Welcome to NJT! Being in Wisconsin most of my life, I've never had a muscadine. It seems they are a favorite of everyone who grows them. Down here in Texas, we call'em Mustang Grapes cause it cuts out one syllable and it's easier to say. actually, I should say Knuckles calls them Mustang cause it's easier for me to say. Most Texans would probably call them by their correct name.

yes Welcome to The Forum but you will have to educate us Northerners because I have never heard of a muscadine or a Mustang grape.

yes Welcome to The Forum but you will have to educate us Northerners because I have never heard of a muscadine or a Mustang grape. They grow wild all over Texas on every fence it seems. They make a wonderful juice. They ain't much good for raw eating cause they sting your lips a little.

I'm about 90 miles north of Meridian...basically the same latitude as Birmingham, AL. My wife graduated with her Master's at State, but we're both BAMA fans.... Roll Tide.

@jong, welcome to NJT, we are glad you joined our little gardening forum and want to hear all about your gardening... I'm in N. E. Mississippi, a little place called Iuka, and we have both the green and purple muscadine that has taken over the little fence where they were started and now are swallowing an old basketball pole and hoop next to it. Now my wife will eat the purple right off the vine if she can the deer here love them... lol!

I'm originally from Russellville, AL, not far from Iuka. Interestingly, my parents got married in Iuka in 1952...cause Mom wasn't old enough to get married in Alabama.

mgulfcoastguy, @jong, I missed the ne part. I used to make the ride up there a few times a year to lead a Bible study with some students at State. I've not done so in the last few years. I look forward to hearing about your gardens.

hey, Mississippi,
Wonderful to have you join us! Looking forward to hearing about all those things I can't grow up here in NW Ohio! I am a westerner by background (southern California) and have raised gardens there, in the mountains of SW Colorado, in SW Michigan and now here, but have never been to your part of the country. Farthest south I have been is Greenville, NC (oh and 24 hours in Kennesaw, GA, but that was a job interview and really doesn't count).
This is a great and kind bunch of people.
Welcome! Cynthia

indigogirl17, Muscadines and scuppernongs are closely related...muscadines are red/purple...scuppernongs are more of the white variety....
