Why in the world would anyone want to live with this??? I paid for my place and i'm not gonna have someone else tell me what I can plant in my front yard, that's where my SIP's are at right now... your thoughts?

I can't imagine wanting to live that close to people to begin with. Plus I am not real good at following rules that are stupid so I would struggle.

Highly unethical, bordering on illegal power grabbing groups of nitwits trying to force their ideas of right and wrong on others. Should be banned and done away with. Our Florida home is governed by an HOA which is not quite so bad as some in the area, thank goodness. More like a group of friends than a governing dictatorship, but still there are some goofy ideas floating around.

We have one but all they do is plant flowers at the entrances to our subdivision.

It's not for me. We bought 4 acres and built our house on it so that we would not be too close to other houses but I think that some people are so worried about getting "trashy" neighbors that they like HOA'S. I could not stand having someone tell me what to do or grow on my own property.
I do think that they might be beneficial for people living in those "over 55" communities since the HOA cuts the grass and does all of the outside maintenance that people may not be able or want to do.

Shoot, we moved out of a small town six years ago because the whole town was behaving like an HOA. They even dictated what color trash bags you had to use for many years.
The plus side to an HOA that I've seen is that many provide things like lawn care and snow removal. For a lot of people who are unable to take care of those kinds of things themselves, it can be worth paying for.

Fortunately, nobody on my block is pretentious enough to have to spray a bunch of weed killer to get a perfect lawn, or worry about what their neighbors are planting. Can you get a refund daylilydude?

I do think that they might be beneficial for people living in those "over 55" communities since the HOA cuts the grass and does all of the outside maintenance that people may not be able or want to do. Yep. There are a lot of those in Florida (the "mature living" communities) and they appeal to a lot of retirees who may not want to or be able to do the outside maintenance. These neighborhoods often have clubhouses/meeting rooms, a pool, picnic areas with BBQs, etc., and throw parties and events for the residents. It's a good idea if it helps people live independently for longer, and if they are happy there. Family-oriented HOA neighborhoods with teensy yards (much smaller than mine), but central playgrounds/parks and neighborhood pools are a thing down here, too. In either case, all of those facilities and amenities have to be maintained, so HOAs make sense. Plus there are the gated communities for folks who have really expensive homes and/or who are worried about crime; they need HOAs with enforceable dues to pay for the gate and guards. There definitely are there are the neighborhoods that paulf alluded to, where the folks running the HOA are drunk on power and/or fanatically paranoid about anything that might drive down property values. So they dictate everything from paint colors to the style of doors and windows to lawn height to landscape plants and lawn ornaments to the style of furniture on your front porch to the size of the flag you fly - if you're allowed to fly one at all! I don't live in an HOA neighborhood, but I do have some deed restrictions (restrictions on parking boats, RVs, and commercial vehicles, keeping noise down at night, and no keeping farm animals). I kinda wish I could keep hens now, but I years ago when I bought the place it never occurred to me that I would ever be interested in doing so. So, I signed the deed willingly. If I ever want to keep hens badly enough, I'd have to move first. But I could paint the house day-glo green with pink polka dots and plant the lawn in solid dandelions with a flock of 1,000 hot pink plastic flamingos to wade among the puffballs if I ever have such an urge. My neighbors would HATE that, but legally they couldn't do a thing to stop me.

Not in a million years. we do the snow removal (and they pay VERY WELL! to not have to do this themselves) and "big machine" work for a couple of HOA's when they need utility repairs. trust me... paying to have these things done as you need them has to be cheaper than their monthly maintenance fees. unless they offer things such as a private swimming pool or other activities that really need a group effort to use and maintain... nope not in a million years is it worth it. it is a hassle!

Oh, and weedkiller is not just for HOA neighborhoods...my next door neighbor had "Vegetation Control" out spraying his lawn this very morning. That's insane. I'm out in the sticks, nobody driving past can even see my house, so... Nobody is forcing me to grow useless turf... The only place that I have any noxious lawn grass growing? The center of my drive.... I even get out there and cut it a couple of times during the growing season.... Vegetation control should be limited to invasive exotics like Chinese wisteria and Japanese honeysuckle.... Not native plants!

Oh, and weedkiller is not just for HOA neighborhoods...my next door neighbor had "Vegetation Control" out spraying his lawn this very morning. Yep. Our across the street neighbors had their spraying done yesterday. We finally put our window unit in so we were able to close the windows and run the A/C so we didn't have to smell or breathe in that noxious stuff! Meanwhile, I love it when our lawn goes a long time between mowings because the clover, dandelions and Indian paintbrush are so pretty when they're all springing up and blooming. Then the lawn gets mowed and they go away for a while.
