Don't grow them but I live within 50 miles of a couple of big mushroom growing areas so cheap, fresh mushrooms are always available in my local stores. In fact I just bought a container of sliced white mushrooms yesterday and it was 3/$5.00 or $1.67 ea.

We used to buy fresh mushrooms but have gotten away from that for some unknown reason. We do buy and use canned mushrooms by the case when we visit Costco.

Love fresh mushrooms in all kinds of cooking, as well as white buttons sliced in salads. Also keep a stock of canned mushrooms for just in case.
I will pick morels in the spring, and boletes in the fall, as those are the only ones I trust myself with. But it's been too dry the last few years here during the mushroom months.

I used to use mushrooms a lot, and did a lot of cooking with some of the more unique varieties, but then my kids discovered their taste buds. Mushrooms literally make both of them gag. Like, you know how people have food dislikes but they will tolerate them sometimes? Not this at all. If one of them puts a bit of mushroom in their mouth and can identify it, it's game over. And they're teenagers- one will be an adult in just a few weeks!
So I don't cook with mushrooms anymore. DS ate one about a year ago on a dare after he was promised money to do so and he almost threw up. I dislike making two dishes for any meal, so I just hardly ever cook with them. On the rare occasion I make something like stroganoff, I cut the mushrooms only in half so they are readily picked off the plates before accidentally consuming.
As such, I definitely don't grow them, but I do buy my parents a mushroom growing kit every year for Christmas. It's their favorite thing! They get pounds upon pounds of baby portobella mushrooms for months before the kit gives up.

Oh my gosh, thinking about mushrooms has me totally remembering a reaction I had to an unusual mushroom. Some time when I was PG with my first, we popped in at home to visit the family and they had just finished dinner. On the table in a serving dish was this bizarre dish of whitish slices in a brown sauce that kind of resembled a strange tofu loaf like thing. I leaned in close to it to smell it, and poked at at, and couldn't figure out what it was at all. So I asked while I tugged on one of the slices that were about 5-6 inches in diameter, because I was genuinely curious. My Dad says "Puffball" and I literally recoiled in horror and screamed like I'd just touched lethal poison. It was totally unexplainable how I reacted, but I was SO incredibly horrified that they would eat puffball AND that I actually touched it. I left the room and wouldn't even go back in until Mom had cleaned up dinner and put it away. Apparently they rather enjoyed it, and they were excited that they were edible after finding puffballs in their mini woods for years. But I don't think they ever prepared them again after that day, and I certainly have no interest in trying them myself. I don't know why, because I'm an adventurous eater, but something about my pregnant self touching cooked puffball... *SHUDDER* So needless to say, I don't go mushroom hunting either, and it's definitely not on my bucket list of things to do.

We love fresh mushrooms, especially portabella, but don't grow any around here. Canned mushrooms are not in our interest.

I love mushrooms of all types. And years ago I grew a bunch of shiitake mushrooms in my basement; easy, but it's been a long time.

Don't grow them, but like eating them; even found a great recipe for canning up marinated mushrooms as well as mushrooms canned in a beef stock, both excellent tasting for later.

Something that I forgot to mention, that I do almost every time that I use mushrooms in an Italian or French style recipe, is to add dry mushrooms - boletus or porcini. I learned this from Marcella Hazan's Italian cookbooks many years ago, and have been addicted to them ever since! It's sort of a pain, but worth it: I soak a small amount in hot water, while preparing the other items, then "massage" the mushrooms in the water, to remove the grit, then remove them to clean water, massage them again (these always have grit in them!), to make sure the grit is removed (2 or 3 rinses always gets it out). Then, strain the water, and reserve. In a skillet or sauté pan, cook the onions and garlic (at least one is almost always in the dishes) in olive oil or butter, then add the chopped up boletus and the soaking water. Cook over high heat, until water is evaporated, add fresh mushrooms, to sauté, and continue with the dish.
As I said, it's sort of a pain, but oooooh, is it worth it!

My youngest three won't touch mushrooms, and my oldest (21) is just starting to tolerate them in small doses. But really for my kids I think it's the texture that bothers them most. In a dish like stroganoff the mushroom flavor is all through the sauce, if subtly, and they like the flavor of the sauce. But if they accidentally get a piece of mushroom in their mouth, they act like I'm trying to poison them. So like you, I make sure the mushrooms are in big pieces when I cook with them. And I get them to pick the mushrooms out of their serving with a clean fork before they start eating - that way I can eat them. But I imagine I will cook a lot more with mushrooms when the kids leave home. I don't forage for mushrooms (too chicken), and I haven't grown any yet. If I ever grow any, it will probably be shiitake. I love shiitake mushrooms, but they are really expensive around here.

I think it's the texture that bothers them most. I don't really care for canned mushrooms. They seem rubbery to me but that is probably because I am used to the fresh ones. I don't use them in recipes as much as I make them sauteed in butter. We just eat them as a side dish.

I love fresh mushrooms and they're really good for you... One grown nephew won't have anything to do with them..."I don't eat fungus"...He won't even eat blue cheese... That's ok...there's more for the rest of us...ha ha... This is the same fussy 'kid' that will not even try one lentil...geez... He wouldn't have survived growing up in my house...

I'm not a fan of canned mushrooms either, brownrexx. But I will eat them. I nearly always use fresh ones in my cooking because I prefer them. The kids hate them either way, though. Blue cheese has such a strong taste that I am just in the past few years acquiring a taste for it. I am up to the "nice in small doses every once in a while" stage now.

The only changes I made was not to soak the mushrooms in water for 10 minutes to clean them, I cleaned them as I always do instead, plus then boiled them in beef stock instead of water. I put these up in pints, with an extra garlic clove or two smashed a bit and some onion in the bottom, add the hot mushrooms and then top off with the stock. Despite the longer processing time, they don't turn to mush.
Here's the marinated recipe, almost like an italian type vinagarette and I use roasted red peppers in there. So good, and every one likes them so far.
