Which way do you think of your way of gardening... work or hobby?

Well...Kind of both... 'Playing' outside, planting, tending the plants, enjoying nature...That's the hobby... Spending hours and hours at the sink, surrounded by bags and bags of produce needing doing up...That's a little more in the work department... But then...cooking is one of my hobbies... I guess it's sort of the chicken or the egg thing...

A necessity, IMO.

I do not deny that gardening is a lot of work but for me it is more of survival/way of life/enjoyment all rolled into one.

I could not have said it any different. I like eating good, chemical free food so that work to grow and prepare it is immaterial to me although sometimes I do get tired of standing at the sink.

If I have to chose between work or hobby, I'll say hobby. The exact word I'd use is fun. Even though gardening is a lot of work and my husband asks me why I want to work so hard, I enjoy it and the rewards are much better than working for money.

Hmmm. I'd say hobby, except it's often too hard work to be really enjoyable. Mostly I do it for exercise and to keep myself out of trouble. Not sure what I'd do with my free time if I couldn't garden. And then there is the bonus of better and more unusual vegetables than you can buy in any store.

More of an avocation rather than a vocation. Gardening has defined me for several years. There are spurts of hard work followed by longer periods of just sitting back and admiring what is growing. The harvest of that work and growth is a bonus. We don't rely on the food aspect for survival but welcome what we reap and share as much as we eat.
My wife works much harder at her flowers and other growing things in the landscape that make the place look good than I do in the vegetable and fruit gardens. Here in the steep hills of the Missouri River valley, mowing is the most difficult part of summertime gardening and the least rewarding for me since it needs to be done so often.

Although gardening is a lot of work, as others have mentioned, the benefits are numerous and healthy as well. I get plenty of exercise daily, plenty of fresh produce and there is an added reason to look forward to the next day. Seeing how much growth is going on with the garden, observing the various stages of fruit and vegetable development, looking for and watching birds and beneficial insects interacting with the garden...all have a calming effect to me. Even my wife, who was raised on a farm but has no interest in gardening, will walk the paths and find things to comment on each day. Although at the end of each season I am relieved that it is over, it isn't very long that I am planning for the next year. Although tomorrow is never guaranteed, I look forward to it anyway.

You didn't include obsession as a choice?
It started out as a hobby, to support another hobby, or more like an obsession - cooking. It used to be mainly tomatoes and peppers, with a few herbs and odds and ends, but eventually, when I got into those Asian cuisines, I had to grow a lot of things, because they were unavailable anywhere around here. It's gotten to be almost a second job, for much of the year, but it's worth it! Nothing like fresh food from the garden!

It's a hobby for me, but one that requires that I work at it, sometimes harder than I care to do, LOL.

Definitely a mixture of the two.

I'd call gardening, and plants in general, a passion - a passion which requires necessary work to engage in most effectively. But then what serious passion or hobby doesn't require some work?

Think everyone has stated great answers. Yes, a garden is a lot of work, but more rewards than work. I have mine set up so can do many chores with a garden tractor and various attachments. Of course there is a point when things get to tall to drive over the top of when cultivating. Probably make more work for myself than needs, but weeds in the garden drive me up a wall. Would not know what to do with myself, if could not garden.

It is always a joy to see the seeds sprout, knowing that soon the hard work will bring forth fruit. It can be very labor intensive, but good exercise is what I need. I love my plants, especially the ones that give me fruits.
Gardening is really just a hobby that makes me work harder in the summer.
