Are you growing any pumpkins, gourds or anything else for fall decorations?

I LOVE fall decorations. I just bought a big orange pumpkin and a white one yesterday. I have the space to grow them but the Squash Vine Borer always kills them and I do not want pesticides in my garden so I buy my decorations.
I usually pick up straw bale decorations after people are done with them. I use the straw for free mulch in my garden but about 5 years ago a local restaurant said that I could have the bales if I also took all of the mums, pumpkins and gourds. I put everything but the straw into my compost pile.
The following year a lot of plants came up in the compost pile and we let them grow. I actually got several of those pale flat pumpkins called Cinderella pumpkins and a ton or beautiful gourds. I had decorations everywhere that year and gave a lot away.
Hubby planted the prettiest gourds called angel wing gourds for a couple of years but of course they are hybrids so we got all kinds of weird looking gourds but it was really fun to see. He still grows Indian corn for decoration from saved seeds that originated from that restaurant.

Yes, my wife loves the fall and Halloween time. So I make a big corn shock from stalks of corn gathered from the garden and add pumpkins grown here around the base to place outside our front door. And we leave it in place till after Thanksgiving. I did a quick search regarding corn shocks and look what one seller asks for a dozen... www.amazon.com/Dried-Corn-Stalk-Bundle-Shucks/dp/B00FG8Z2FO

At present there are two pumpkins and a whole yardful of fall flowers and a bunch of bittersweet. My wife loves to decorate for the season whichever it is.

(In fairness, it probably costs that much to ship them due to their length.) I see a marketing opportunity here for you corn growers - turn your garden waste into green! I wonder how many people will actually pay that much, though. SVBs are brutal here, and mention that the summer rainy season is not kind to squash vines. I have never managed to ripen any winter squash except Seminole Pumpkin. I don't have space for corn and subdivision neighbors get unhappy and call code enforcement if you let your grass grow long enough to make hay/straw bales. So, no, I don't grow anything for fall displays. Also, it's not a good plan to set pumpkins and gourds outside in September and October in my area - it's too warm still, so they don't keep outside for long. Folks here do use pumpkins and gourds inside the house, though. And sometimes you'll see pumpkins and gourds outside in November because it's finally cool enough. Corn stalks, ornamental corn, artificial wreaths in fall colors, and especially scarecrows are the popular fall displays here. Oh, and I can't forget straw bales - though here you see the tiny overpriced, super-clean and neat floral decoration bales, not actual straight from the farm bales that might have dirt or even bugs in them.

Yeah, it's that kind of neighborhood. Being a gardener puts me in a very tiny minority.

We always decorated it because the kids loved it. We grow pumpkins, sell the seeds, and make some decorations. But still, I like decorations better that can be used for more than one year. We realized that decorations were expensive and had to be changed every year. We ended up just ordering flags like this for each holiday homemakerguide.com/garden-flags/. Good quality, they will not last a year. It's more eco-friendly, and they look great.
