I want to grow pole beans (Kentucky Wonder green beans) and was going to let them grow up my chain-link fence. Will that work or do they need a very tall trellis? My fence is about 4 foot high. My area is very windy, too...I'm on an acre that is basically in the middle of a cow pasture, hahaha...so not sure how well a tall trellis would work unless it's on the house. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

It'll be enough. Bean will top that, and twine together on top of fence. Which they will also do with a ten foot tall trellis...

Excellent! Thanks for such a quick response.
I was dreading having to build some kind of trellis to attach to the house...and I am NO carpenter, hahaha!

I'm the weird one of the bunch, I don't like green beans that much at all, unless it's in a stew!

Your fence idea is what I'll have to use for many varieties this year. Not a cow pasture but an open prairie. I have maybe 150 Christmas tree trunks which I normally would use but they will only be used where there's something to break the wind. In the open field, I've got 200' of 4' fencing. Garden will be 190' long so the beans may become a windbreak for everything else. And, looks like at least 40 pole varieties for this year.

Which one is best for "Dilly Beans"? You'd want a straight bean for them. Kentucky Blue would be just a bit more straight than Kentucky Wonder. If color were no issue, Kentucky Wonder Wax would also work. Martin

For the last 2 yrs. I've grown La.purple pod.Excellent!I'm gonna have to try 'em out in the dill pickle recipe this year and I'll let you know(it would be cool if they stayed purple).I like'em cause they're easy to see-very helpful to those of us who have the dreaded disease known as C.S.S.!

Ciao Rich-
I like pickled beans, too. I've always used flat Italian romano types because I grew up with that flavour and I find them easiest to pack because of their flat shape.
