Having a purpose in life may be one of the most important factors in longevity: Finding a purpose
And I came across in a related post of a quote attributed to Tom Bodett.. “They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
I love my wife, daughter and grandson. Gardening and taking care of the ponds gives me plenty to do. And I hope to have continued good health to be able to be with loved ones, gardening and the ponds for a long, long time. So I think my purpose is finding a way to enjoy these three things.

In order to do all of the above I need to wake up tomorrow morning. My goal is to do a whole lotta waking' up.

Along with that though, is figuring out how to keep functioning when parts of your body won't cooperate anymore. My something to hope for is that I could be free from the arthritis and other degenerative joint and back pains that plague me, but I doubt that will happen. You never appreciate good health until you start losing it.

september, can you just ignore the pain? Many times this is what I do, take Tylenol and pretend I don't ache.

octave1 , I have tried the usual stuff, aspirin, ibuprofen, tylenol, naproxen and they all work a little, more sometimes than others. I probably am a wuss compared to others that have it way worse than me.

september, octave1 I just save my peppers - Chewing the hotter ones I grow (3-400k) makes the body kick out a bunch of endorphins to kill the pain in my mouth, and the pains in the joints and the back are reduced greatly, and it lasts about 6 hours. I have done this for my back, shoulder, and knee surgeries, and it has worked better than the opioid pain killers prescribed to me. I still have 50 percoset pills, from this last knee surgery - I have to turn them in at one of those places they have occasionally, for leftover pills. For the annoying pains, Naproxin does better than Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Tylenol does absolutely nothing for me, and I discovered this when back in '93 I had sinus surgery, and they said that I'd have to stay off of any of the other pain killers besides Tylenol for 30 days before the surgery, since they thin the blood. This is when I started using peppers, for my shoulder!

can you just ignore the pain? I probably am a wuss compared to others that have it way worse than me. It really depends on how bad your arthritis is. Not everyone has the same amount of damage or pain. I have a lot more arthritis than is normal for my age. I have already had one knee replacement and also surgery to remove a small bone in my thumb joint. My thumb was getting so stiff that I could barely use it because the 3 small bones in the joint had become jammed together and the pain was constant even with medication. Now it hardly hurts at all but I do have some stiffness in my hands which I hate but they seem to work OK at this point. I also have significant lower back pain and stiffness in the morning but it seems to lessen as I start to move around. I am really disappointed about this but what can I do? My mother had a lot of arthritis so it's probably unavoidable. I never assume that someone is a wuss about arthritis pain because I know how bad it can be. On days that I do a lot of physical work I know that I will be extremely sore and stiff the next day. I have had physical therapy for a number of joints and they showed me certain exercises which really work for neck and back pain. This is one reason that I go to the gym on a regular basis. I want to keep my posture good and not slouch and get bent forward like many spinal arthritis sufferers. I constantly remind myself to sit up straight or stand up straight.

Yes I have a purpose in life! My mother died when I was 9 and my father died when I was 13. I went from one form of abuse to the next after that. SO my purpose in life is to make my parents proud of the daughter they had to leave behind. To do my best to bring love, joy and laughter to all that need some. To always try to treat others the way I want to be treated.

I probably am a wuss compared to others that have it way worse than me. The "usual" generic stuff works but only for generic ailments. I, too, was using the common pain killers when arthritis got so bad that I could not make a fist. The bouts with pneumonia had doctors and hospital staff telling me that I was going down the wrong road. When the arthritis was in early stage, WalMart's generic slow-release ibuprofen for the ailment. I was told to check with my pharmacist who turned me to specific arthritis-relief pills that work twice as effective as the common pain killers. Your local supermarket may even have their own brand such as our Kroger. Won't hurt you to try a small bottle and see if it works in your case. Martin The truth is more important than the facts.

To always try to treat others the way I want to be treated. This post touched my heart. It's also a reminder of what a positive attitude can accomplish. No matter how bad you think you have it, there's always someone who is worse off. There was a quote in a movie a long time back and I think it's a good one. Someone asked an elderly gentleman what was the worse thing about getting old. He replied, "I think it's remembering how great it was being younger." I'm sure I messed that quote up a little. Getting old takes its toll on the body. Simple things like bending over, crawling around on your knees, grasping and opening jars, getting up and down stairs, etc. all the little things we used to do without thinking become hard to do. I used to roughhouse a lot. We played full contact football without helmets or pads. I'm not sure that was such a great idea, but we sure loved it back then. We'd have backyard wrestling matches and chunk each other around trying to do what we saw on TV. Young and Dumb as I always say.

What do I miss most?
Fluid movement. I could scale down stairs barely touching the steps. When I threw a punch it was like lightening. I miss being able to roughhouse.

In my teens I had long legs and flexibility, I would run home from my girlfriends house hurdling over the burning barrels and trash cans in the alley, just to see if I could.

I like to say that I am basically healthy but I have a few "structural issues".
As much as it bothers me to feel so stiff in the morning and not be as flexible as I used to be, I am grateful to be healthy and not have some of the diseases that others in my age group have.
I feel that I am more active than many other women my age and my doctor agrees so that makes me feel good.
