According to yesterday's poll, watermelon was selected as the favorite by a landslide.
Do you ever put salt on your watermelon?
My mom used to salt cantaloupe and hubby salts his watermelon. It is said to bring out the sweetness but I never do it and don't like it.
Do you salt your watermelon or other melons before eating?

No, never! And I would never put sugar on my tomatoes, either!

Salt and pepper on cantaloupe but nothing belongs on watermelon. I have bought some watermelons that definitely needed something but probably mot salt.

Melon is one of very few things that I add salt to. Yes, am guilty of adding sugar to tomatoes.

Sugar on tomatoes used to be very common. Had an uncle who loved to start an argument at threshing time over if tomatoes were a fruit or vegetable and if they needed sugar or salt. He was a sugar person as were probably half at the table. I also was a sugar person back then but would not think of doing it now.

As a kid we had to sugar the tomatoes my dad grew. He only grew hybrid bought at the hardware store round red really tart tomatoes. That is one of the reasons it was easy for me to become an heirloom/OP tomato grower and eater.

I never heard of sugar on tomatoes before last summer. I had brought tomatoes to a get together with friends and she sliced them and got out the sugar bowl. I tried it but didn't like it.

My Mom and Wife both put salt on Cantaloupe & Watermelon. It drives me bat crap crazy! I have to make sure I get portion before they get to it. I don't care much for salt and I darn sure don't want it in something sweet.

That's 50 lashes across the forehead with a cooked noodle missy! For what? Not putting sugar on tomatoes (which sounds revolting) or salt on the watermelon? If it is the watermelon, surely you have ended up with a tasteless one in the past? Once in a great while I end up with one that not only needs a touch of salt but some pepper also. But I prefer my watermelon cold and saltless!

In recent years, seedless watermelons become quite cheap in stores. For less than $5, you can get one that's too big to carry in one arm. But thee is a sort of rule of thumb. You will never find a good one before the Fourth of July. This year was no different. First ones that came through the system had over an inch of white and probably could have been eaten with salt with no remorse. Next wave were the sweetest that I ever found in a store. Slightly smaller ones in the system now but haven't bought one yet.

paquebot, Yep you is right on the supermarket melons. We have a family that lives in Cedar Springs that I've known for a real long time. They raise melons and we always visit them about this time of year. That soil is fantastic for maters and melons. It's a red sandy soil. It's about time for a visit. I gotta get Mom a yellow meat melon.

I don't really like melons, though I will eat a little watermelon every now and then if it is really sweet. I can't imagine salting fresh fruit, though. Ick! But then I am not a fan of salty & sweet together in most cases. But DH will salt both watermelon and cantaloupe, though. (Usually he does it when I'm not looking because he knows it grosses me out.) The kids don't salt their melons, thankfully. Sugar on raw tomatoes seems gross to me, though I have been known to add a pinch of sugar to a tomato sauce if the tomatoes used to make it were tart or bland. I don't usually salt my raw tomatoes, either. Though when you think about it, there is at least a little salt in most salad dressings, so if you eat most of your fresh tomatoes in salads chances are you're eating them with a little salt. And when making a BLT, applying a sprinkle of salt and a generous sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper directly onto the tomato slices turns a good sandwich into an amazing sandwich.

I've put salt on watermelon before and on cucumbers. Never put sugar on tomatoes but we frequent a restaurant where I used to order spaghetti but the new chef adds so much sugar to the sauce that I don't like it, plus the vegetable soup now tastes like cinnamon - don't like it anymore either.

the vegetable soup now tastes like cinnamon - don't like it anymore either. That doesn't sound too good. One time I washed out and used an empty spice container to make some cinnamon sugar and hubby grabbed it because it had the same color top as the chili powder. He added cinnamon sugar to his chili and that was not too good either! Now whenever he makes chili I usually ask him if he remembered to add the cinnamon.

We used to go to a restaurant after church on Sundays that had great home style food. They got a new cook who started putting diced onions in the mashed potatoes. First time I thought it was a mistake and just didn't eat them. The next week they were the same so I never ordered them again.

I'll tell ya something else that chaps my hide concerning mashed potatoes. 1. The cook that's to lazy to peel the potatoes. Mashed potaders don't look or taste good leaving the peelings on. They ain't fooling nobody, all they are doing is taking their left over baked potatoes and mashing them. 2. The cook that though Garlic was a good addition to mashed potatoes. Whoever invented that dish needs it stuck up their pootshoot. Ok rant over.
