bestofour, chopped onions in mashed potatoes does not sound good to me either. I would like onions in home fries though.

I like mashed potatoes both ways...skins on...skins off... As long as there's butter and salt, doesn't matter too much...

I have had mashed potatoes with red skin and I liked them but for Thanksgiving I want regular mashed potatoes with nothing added but butter and whole milk. No cream cheese or anything else for me.

Cream cheese in mashed potatoes doesn't work for me. Sometimes I like garlic, but it has to be thoroughly-cooked so it's mellow, not sharp. And not so much that it is overpowering.
I prefer mashed potatoes without skin, but with skin is fine as long as the skin is thin, tender, and in small pieces. Not big sheets of hard, dry baked potato skin. Blech.

Mashed potatoes with skins not good? Hmmmm! When potatoes are boiled with the skins on, they get mashed on the dinner plate. Six of one, half dozen of the other,

I put tomatoes in my cucumber salad, which has salt, vinegar, sugar, onion and tabasco. I have eaten tomatoes sprinkled with sugar but do not do this as a habit.
I have eaten melons with and without salt, prefer them cold and plain.

Only on very low brix melons to make them edible. If they have any flavor they don't need salt.
