What's your favorite pumpkin?
i haven't grown many. The one I did try, I wasn't impressed at all. I think it was called Jonathan. It was white and shaped like a gourd. It was supposed to be a good keeper. I brought 6 of them inside and they rotted within a month or two.

Whatever grows is my favorite. I have tried several over the years without much luck. Even the Dill Giant only got up to 100 pounds and I babied that one all summer long. Not much on melons or pumpkins but I keep trying. Little decorative gourds do OK.

I've only grown pumpkins for their seeds. The hull-less kind. Kakai - traditional open pollinated 'oil seed' variety. Very attractive pumpkins with lovely green strips, but the flesh watery and definitely not for eating. I'd grow the kakai just for decorations alone they are so pretty. I still have 3 pumpkins from last years crop that havent self-destructed yet.
I grew another pepita-type from Johnny's, cant remember it's name. But it gave lots of small, attractive all orange pumpkins, with a good return of seeds, but the critters started eating the pumpkins iwth a vengeance so I had to harvest early and the seeds were not as plump as they could have been.

I have yet to succeed with pumpkin, but SVBs are bad here. And they need a lot of room to sprawl, which I don't have. So I just buy pumpkins.

I have never had any success with pumpkins so I quit trying. The SVB always get them before I get pumpkins.

I don't have room for pumpkin vines, and don't need more than one at a time, so have never grown them.

Which ever one is used in the pie... Pumpkin pie is my absolute favorite pie and it's the same as eating vegetables right? I love it.

hairymooseknuckles, paulf, Gianna, Laura_in_FL, brownrexx, daylilydude, september, pepperhead212, I wanted to share some information. Now this is heresy so take it with a grain of salt. For those of you who like squash, but have SVB's. I have heard that Tatume squash are able to withstand those bugs and give you crop. Like I said, I don't know this to be fact, it's just something I've heard.

I've read the same in several places, but never tried them. They are a long-vine squash which is an issue in my small garden.

Canned pumpkin pie mix is made from one or more types of winter squash, like butternut, Hubbard, Boston Marrow, and Golden Delicious. These squash varieties can be less stringy and richer in sweetness and color than pumpkin. A few years back I actually got a few pumpkins and some of the grandkids carved one each and hounded grandma into making a pumpkin pie. It was the best pumpkin pie I ever ate...also the last time I was able to eat one made from scratch. It was so long ago I still had some dark hair
