I'm going to mix up a sprayer and keep it on the front porch to spray them when they fly by. Last summer they were so bad they drove us inside. If you come up with a way to keep them off clothes on the clothesline, let me know ASAP!

Saw this program the other day where a new type of stink bug is invading the US. I think it is from China. Anyway this man had thousands in his house and on his property. It was sickening. I'll mix me up some cigarette spray!

Good to know ! Just don't spray tomatos with it... Sound Advice MarieLouise... They say that these days TMV disease doesn't exist in tobacco...BULL A report came out a couple years ago...Gross to think about..However: Women who smoked had traces of TMV turn up in... PAP SMEARS... casual transference from their hands Now My question for Redneckplanter... since we gave up smokin...could this be done with bulk tobacco, or chewin tobacco?? I know the tobacco spray was done with ciggs fer many years

I know the tobacco spray was done with ciggs fer many years i'm sure it could be done with bulk products. someone smarter than me would have to figgure out the correct ratios though. my area is small enough that a half gallon or a gallon is enough for each batch.smiles

I heard of it being done with chewing tobacco. It's a recipe from Jerry Baker. I think he cooks his too.

I imagine nicotine will kill most anything. It used to be the main ingredient in alot of over the counter aerosol bug sprays like Black Flag. They quit using it in about the 1980's. Be careful with the "ciggie mix".

Ya Phil I tell you what I told our redheaded juvenile. Tobacco is Tobacco and as such kills everything. He is taking measure to use it wisely so as to not contaminate everything. I just wanted to beat him in here. I used to cook mine, boil it in water to create a strong juice. Heheh You will have to get his method from him. Train

One way to deal with earwigs is to place rolled up damp newspapers for the earwigs to hide in come daylight. Dispose of the critters during the day.

Mixed up my first batch of "backy tea" yesterday. 10 cigarillos to a gallon of warm water and a couple drops of dishsoap. Strained into pump sprayer this morning and went hunting. Sprayed leaf-foot plant bugs, shield shaped stink bugs, harlequin bug (I think) nymphs, squash bugs and a few stray grasshoppers.
Observations:
Need to increase strength of brew and maybe add a couple more drops of dishsoap. Watching initially sprayed bugs, they were definitely affected, as they did not move as quickly, and they were not happy. I watched a leaf-foot for 10 minutes and it did not actually die. I worked my way back and forth through the tomato patch about 3 times. I'm sure most bugs got more than one soaking. On my final pass, I watched a large leaf-foot, and it did die. The biggest grasshopper was 4-5" long and after 1 spray, instead of hopping 3-4' or flying 15', it hopped maybe 6" and after landing, wobbled side to side. I followed it over a couple rows. Hop. Spray. Hop. Spray, etc. It was still alive when I gave up, but I suspect it succumbed later.
I used not quite half the gallon. Poured it back into my jug and added 5 more cigarillos and just a little water. Put the jug out in the open to "sun brew".
Will give it another go this evening or tomorrow morning.

Whelp after increasing the potency of the brew, I strained it back into the pump sprayer this afternoon and added about a teaspoon of Dawn to the between 1/2 and 3/4 gallon of "tea". The change was dramatic! A leaf-foot bug took about 1 minute to die dead. A squash bug about the same. Their nymphs less time. A true green shield shaped stink bug about 20 seconds. The harlequin nymphs - about 5 seconds. I didn't see anymore grasshoppers, so they either died from the morning sweep or decided the area wasn't fun anymore and skeedadled. Dawg's got hisself a new toy and is a happy puppy! It'll almost be a shame not to have the bugs to play with anymore.........NOT! Thanks Gcg for the correction to the formula. Thanks Red for bringing the recipe for this little bit of fun to my attention. I was darn near jumping up and clicking my heels together in the garden. (No it wouldn't be a pretty picture. Lol.)
