I had tried finding the seeds for Lippia graveolens in the past, but have not been able to find them - only plants - despite seeing photos of flowering plants. Even Richter's and ebay didn't have them. However, I got a new batch of Mexican oregano recently, so I got one of my trusty eye loupes, and went through a tsp or so of the herb, and found a number of tiny blossoms, many opened, and I just broke them apart, looking for anything appearing to be a seed. I got two of them, and put them on a pad, soaked with the GA-3, and in just 24 hours it had sprouted - probably even less, given the size of it. I'll put it in a Jiffy pellet, to start out, and see how it goes. Sprouted Mexican oregano seed. by pepperhead212, on Flickr I started some Cleopatra oregano this way, a couple weeks ago. I got the seeds a couple years ago, but didn't have any luck with them, until starting some with some GA-3.

Interesting, I hope it grows up for you! I often buy those little humble clear packets of spices found on the carousel racks in the little Mexican tiendas while we are there. I've noticed the oregano has a lot of coarse blossom materials in it. I should check for seeds in some of the stuff I brought home.

You really wanted those seeds, pepperhead212! Good scavenging. I wonder why the seeds are so hard to find, though?

I heard from someone on another site, who has grown it, that it does not reseed well, despite all of the flowers - sort of like some types of mint. Hopefully, I'll get something to take.

I was at the local farmer's market last night and there is a vendor with over 300 spices. I asked if he had Mexican Oregano and he didn't. I was going to buy some to try it.

lisaann I got that Mexican oregano from a place on ebay - I rarely buy from Penzey's, since I get a most from the Indian market now (super cheap, incredibly fast turnover, and things Penzey's doesn't carry), and once in a while, a single item, like this, on ebay. Usually no shipping charges. But even there, I couldn't find seeds, which told me that they are not out there!

I was grocery shopping today, and noticed Mexican Oregano next to plain Oregano in with the little spice shakers. I don't recall the name brands, but two different spice sections had it -- don't ever remember seeing it up here before. Must be getting more popular with the gourmet cooks.
