Hi All, Found an old friend posting here and have joined up. Seems like a good community and I'm excited to join in the fray. I do see some familiar monikers already. For those I don't know - I am in Chicago, on a somewhat large for the city lot, but still a city lot and pretty small compared to many gardeners spreads. I've so far resisted the urge to sell up and buy a hobby farm. I work FT downtown. WFH currently but my company has been impacted by the pandemic and it is long stressful hours these days. Since I am urban/relatively small yard I have been trying to put together a really attractive potager style garden. So far - the success has eluded me on completing that. I have a number of raised beds. My first one finally gave out and collapsed, but is still in use, with snapped and degraded board in the paths. Of course - being the oldest it has the best soil. Do have some critters messing with my vegetation attempts, not sure who. That has been an ongoing issue. Racoon? Possum? The evidence in the newly planted fall veggie bed this morning indicate something larger than squirrels. I am also vegan, so eat a lot of vegetables! Household is 2 vegans and 1 vegetarian. I've always had a bit of a focus on self sufficiency, and prefer to grow as much of our own food as possible. I am really focused on greens - and love to try the more obscure and unusual. We love green smoothies! In my first attempt to get back into hardcore gardening my spring plantings this year were not a great success. Excited to try for fall, we will see if the critters allow it!

So happy to see you here tbird , welcome to the group. It's a good mixture of posters with large and small gardens from across the country and I think that you will be the first from the Chicago area. Speaking of greens, pepperhead212 introduced me to Bok Choy 3 years ago and now I grow it every year. It's such a nice vegetable. Do you grow that one? This year hubby discovered beet greens and now I grow beets and the entire plant gets utilized. pepperhead212 grows a lot of Asian greens so you may also get some ideas from him. Looking forward to hearing more about your gardening efforts and I know that you also cook some good things so join in on the "What's for Supper" thread.

tbird,
Hey woman,
Do you still have that bench at the back of your yard, where you can sip tea and admire the gardens?
Waving at you. How old are your kids now?

tbird ,
Hey woman,

Waving at you. How old are your kids now? lol! Hi lisaann! No - the bench continued to deteriorate and was pitched. 30 and 24, unbelievable! Both lost work this year and are home, so it is nice and I'm thankful we are together at this time and that my job continues and we are all provided for. Pray it continues. Hopefully - they will both find something soon. But if not, still thankful for what is. We are all in good health. A family friend died of covid a month or so ago. Very tragic.
