Speaking of hotdogs, it’s almost bean time. No wonder I’m hungry!

Only got fancy at family reunions and used hamburger and hotdog buns there. At home it for the longest time was home made bread sliced. Then gramma passed away and BAM here came the store bought. I cheat and buy them sometimes myself too.

My family always ate our hot dogs and sausages off a plate, usually with boiled potatoes that we mashed on our plates with butter and salt. Going out somewhere and having them on a bun was a treat! Buns are party fare, good for finger foods.

You mean none of you bake your own hamburger and hot dog rolls??? I do remember eating hot dogs on sliced white bread, but I can't imagine how long ago! Early 70s maybe. Those buns are one of the few bread things I buy premade.

You mean none of you bake your own hamburger and hot dog rolls??? Tried that once and it did not work out so well and it's not really worth it for just the 2 of us anyway. Yes, I need buns for hamburgers or hot dogs and they are not interchangeable. I do not want my hot dog on a hamburger bun or vice versa. Don't even try to tell me that they are the same bread, Mom used to tell me that but I need the right shape too!

Back around 1990, I decided to try something different on the menu. I should have asked what it was, but being me, I just ordered it and let the chips fall. They had what they called the Frisco Burger. When they make their chili, they just use gallon cans of chili, dice up wieners and dump it in a crock pot. Then Heat up. When you order a chili dog, they just pour the chili and wieners over half a hamburger bun. Well the Frisco, is just half a bun, a ground beef patty, with the wieners and chili poured over then some shredded cheese on top. Ill never forget being served that mess on a plate. I just looked at it in disbelief for a minute. My thoughts were “what idiot came up with this concoction.” I hope the owner doesn’t see this because she and I are good friends, but if I was made King for a day, that mess is getting dumped. I like wieners and I like chili, but I don’t want it to look like it’s already been chewed up before it gets to me.

I made my own hamburger buns once. They were good, but way too much time and trouble to do on a regular basis.
I am firmly in the "use a bun" camp. I hate dry burgers or hot dogs, so I like lots of toppings on burgers and hot dogs. Using lots of toppings means the moisture causes sliced bread to soak through and fall apart. So, even if I don't end up wearing half of the burger or dog, I end up with a soggy mess that I have to eat with a knife and fork. With a proper bun, I can pick up and eat that loaded up burger with lots of juicy tomatoes and pickles, or that hot dog with lots of mustard, relish, and chili.
I haven't found any low-carb hot dog or hamburger bun substitutes that are worth eating. So, when I am really watching my carbs, I just skip the bun and eat a bun-less burger or dog. I put the meat on a plate, load it up with toppings and eat it with a knife and fork.

My favorite hamburger rolls are the kaiser type rolls, and I can make that type, but can't remember the last time I did! And I never made the wonder bread type - what most buns are. And can't remember the last time I bought the buns for either, except for taking to a friend's house for parties. For just one person, those aren't the types of things I cook, or get cravings for. But then, I cook weird things!

We purchase bread and buns. Most of my sandwiches are on hamburger buns even though the bun has been downsized to about half the size they used to be. I know....the bun people know I am 40 lbs over weight and need to eat less.
