Does anyone have a good plant ID app they use? I have been checking them out but can see no reason that any app needs to see any of my personal info.

No, but I wish I did.
Of course, the reason that all of those apps want so much of your personal info is that whenever the software is free, YOU are the product.

I have one that was recommended by a friend and I put it on my phone but I have not tried it yet. It is called Seek. I think you set the camera function up to see the plant and it will identify it. It appears to be associated with National Geographic. I downloaded it from the Play Store and you can check it out if you're interested but like I said I have not tried it yet. I did not enter any personal information to download it

I used the free version of Picture This for a while and decided I liked it so much I wanted to upgrade to the paid version. With so many plants in my yard, it's been wonderful being able to scan them and find out whether they are something we want to keep or try to get rid of. It also gives tips for how to best care for the keepers. I also like that when I scan a plant I can decide if I want to add it to my home collection or not, so all the greenery that I've identified in my yard has it's own space in the app, and any plant I've ID'ed elsewhere isn't clumped in with all of those.
The free version had a limit to the number of times you could use it per month, but I never met the max with the free version, and probably could have stayed free.

I have a free ap that knows more about me than I do. It is called "Ask my wife". If she does not know, it does not grow in our yard. No phone necessary, just yell.

ladymarmalade, that Picture This app sounds really handy. I have a bunch of plants I need to identify on the new property to see whether they are "keepers" or not. Hopefully the app has a good database of plants native to the Deep South and other subtropical plants.

I've never scanned anything and had it come up empty, so now I'm curious about how deep their database goes.

Awe, so sweet of you to ask. I decided to do something really dumb and go back to school full time. SO in addition to working 50+ hours a week, I'm also a full time student. I'm a wee bit tired and don't often get time to myself to play on the internet. It'll be good in the end and I've really loved my classes, but wowzers, what I wouldn't give for just two days in a row that I could sleep more than five hours a night. I scheduled myself for short days today and tomorrow since it's my fall break so that I could literally sit around the house in my sweatpants and do nothing.

ladymarmalade, Well it’s good to hear from you! Enjoy school. I had a blast returning to school when I was almost 40. It was culture shock to see how young people conducted themselves, but I got used to them pretty quick. I enjoyed the experience immensely!

I had forgotten about it until I saw your question just now.
When I looked on the App Store I couldn't find a free version of Picture This. The only option was a 7-day free trial and then $29.99/year. So I uninstalled it.

ladymarmalade, I decided to do something really dumb and go back to school full time. Not dumb at all. My wife and I both "retired" and went back to school with three young children. Actually we both worked full time and had a mortgage and rent since where we went to school was a couple hundred miles from our home of nearly 20 years. Everything worked out great and we became closer as a family because of it. Our new degrees did us no harm in the job market either. Great experience. Enjoy!
