During Waldo's annual checkup we did a needle biopsy on a small mass on his right foreleg. The results were inconclusive so yesterday we had the mass removed and sent to the state veterinary school. The results should be in within 10 days when his stitches are to be removed. He had an utterly ridiculous cone on, too long to eat or drink with. So I just got some vet wrap and wrapped the stitches that they had left exposed. If he can't lick it he doesn't try. Why they bothered to vet wrap the IV leg and not the operated one puzzles me. Maybe they charge by the inch of wrap since it was $786 and some odd change.

I hope the results will be clear for Waldo. It does seem odd that they didn't wrap the incision site, if only to keep dirt out. Vet prices are so high now, I understand why, they have to pay as much for Veterinary school as medical doctors do, and buy all the latest equipment and rent or buy an office and hire staff. Up until 10 years ago, I used a country vet that worked out of his home, his wife kept books. He may not have been as good at complex diagnoses, but for annual vaccinations, and routine neuterings he was much cheaper. He had some allergies, and one of my cats always set him off.
I hope Waldo is feeling back to normal now.

It's difficult to even get an appointment with a vet in my area. When my cat got sick recently, the vet I have gone to for 20 years had a 2 week wait and the other vet in town would not even schedule her. They suggested the Pet Urgent Care and they saw her the same day. Expensive but they were really good.

So sad that there seems to be a vet shortage everywhere. The vet we use for our pooch has 2 offices. The main office and a smaller branch closer to us. That little branch is closing this Dec. Very sad as that little branch has been up and running for years. Took our pets there when I was a child even.

My vet is in an office with 4 or 5 more vets. Each has specialities and will consult with the other vets as needed. They tend to stay there until they have the experience to open their own office or their spouse gets transferred to another city. The current vet has been their over 9 years and still looks like she is sixteen.
Waldo just got a pain pill so he will be a happy boy for a few hours. h His stitches will be taken out a week from today and that is when I will probably hear about what the State lab says about the mass. He has been far healthier than my previous Boxer , the result of a reputable breeder and more experience on correct feeding and supplements. The next dog will be from a healthier breed though with less genetic short comings.

The mass was a very rare but non dangerous type. The bad news is that he had been licking his stitches and thus had an infection. I had removed his first cone as it was way too long, preventing him from eating or drinking. He now has a foam donut on. He can eat and drink but can't get out the dog door. Another week with that and a weeks worth of antibiotics.

Wonderful news. The stitches and the donut are a pain but at least it's not cancer! Yay.
