Never had a sugar plum. In fact, I always assumed that they were real plums that had been sugared/candied, not hard candy. Live and learn.
I saw chestnuts in the grocery store one year before Christmas, so on a lark I bought them and roasted them. They were pretty tasty. I was surprised at how sweet they are. They were pretty good, but not amazing.

I never knew what a sugar plum was either and have never had one but I do have a chestnut tree and I eat a few chestnuts. I cut an X and microwave then though, no real roasting.
Over the years I set up a stand at the end of my driveway and people would buy them. Many people use them in turkey stuffing. I tried that one time and we didn't like it. I cut them up but the pieces had a crunch to them and we didn't like the texture.
This year a man who had bought them from me previously contacted me and asked for 50 pounds! His family is from Turkey and they eat them all the time after roasting them in the oven. I was only able to accumulate 25 pounds because the drought must have affected production. He asked me to keep his contact info and he wants as many as I can provide next year. They drove 1/2 hrs to my house from New Jersey so they must really like my chestnuts!
His daughter told me that in Turkey there are chestnut trees all over.

Never had sugar plum, either! Didn't even know that it was candy, hairymooseknuckles, I recently saw a lady on our PBS station who has her own show make sugared fruit for a decoration. Had never seen that before either. She took fruit, that was a little too ripe to eat, and coated it in raw egg whites and then dipped it in white granulated sugar. She arranged it on a tray and it crystalized beautifully and lasted for weeks. Made for a nice centerpiece.

What a fancy dessert octave1, I may just try that next year. Reading this recipe also gave me an idea that maybe making a chestnut puree and adding it to some soft sugar cookies might also be good.
