Today it was getting late enough for the ten day old seedlings to be popping up. Since twelve have not, twelve substitutes got planted. Another week and it may be a year without the variety I want. Plenty of plants but maybe there will be doubles...or triples.
Peppers are great, wife's flowers better than ever, old seed maybe not doing so well.

Too early for me to start tomatoes yet, though I will probably do peppers any day now. Every year I oversow the really old seeds. Never can predict how many will come up. One year I decided to empty an old TGS commercial packet of Yellow Brandywine that was over 15 years old and unused since the first couple of years. It took over 12 days for any to emerge, but then they started popping and I ended up with almost the entire pack of 18-20 sprouts! And then there are times you are lucky to get one or two.

4 out of the 9 "test" tomato seeds I planted have not had a single one sprout in 10 days. If none of them sprout, come planting time, I'll plant a bunch of those (I'll soak those in some KNO3 - something I always use for pepper seeds, but didn't soak these in), and if none germinate, I'll fill in those pots with seedlings of similar varieties. In a few days my chinense pepper seeds will be planted, since those are slower.

I only have lettuce and bok choy started so far but the Little Gem mini romaine lettuce didn't come up and since the seeds were 2 years old I reordered. Guess what popped up the next day? Yep, Little Gem.
I won't start tomatoes for about 2 more weeks.

I tried some brassicas (kohlrabi, kale, bok choy, and Chijimisai the only ones I tested) direct seeded a few weeks ago, when it was in the 60s, at the end of February. lol It was just to see if any would come up, and when they would - not something I usually do; I usually start them inside around 3-20, to put out around the middle of April. I still didn't see any coming up after 12 days, last time checked, but, of course, it's been cooler.

Yep, Little Gem... Don't you hate it when the, "I gave up and bought a replacement" sensor activates! Seems like whenever I buy a replacement for something, the old thing either starts working again, the seeds finally germinate, or the lost thing is suddenly found. At least now you can grow LOTS of lettuce.

The replacement alarm going off and trying to find a replacement is a nerve racking situation. What I want to grow, what can be found and whether what grows is actually what the label says it is are totally different from the original intentions. I think whatever comes up is going to be planted...just say no to store bought plants. Quality control is unheard of in most cases. For now, the time is past for reordering seeds. Just bite the bullet and hope for a better next year. At least there are lots of peppers and flowers coming up. Six weeks to planting the seeds that get direct sown.

spike, I think that I will start my pepper seeds today. I don't usually start peppers from seed but I am doing a few this year and they take longer to germinate than tomatoes, they will get started next week.
