Just got home a little bit ago from a new part-time job. I first umpired baseball at age 16. For the next 25 years I did game for kids from age 10 up to 16 year olds, umpired high school games until we retired 18 years ago. Officials are hard to find so I put my name back into the available list, got all my old equipment (except I had to buy new pants for some odd reason) and tonight did a 12 year old game. Everything came back pretty easily and except for a couple of goofs everything went pretty smoothly. No fans yelled at me and the coaches and players gave me no problems. Ready for a full summer of work behind the plate.

C’mon Ref, put your glasses on! Hahahaaaa! I never did baseball, but did some B-ball back in the day. I left that behind 20 years ago. You Gotta throw a technical every so often. Usually it’s some jerk on the bench who doesn’t stand a chance in H of getting on the court, but has a set of lungs like a blind calf in a hail storm. A technical shuts them down quick if they have any sense.

how nice of you to step back in to do some reffing! A thankless job these days with helicopter parents thinking their kids can do no wrong. You're looking good in your uniform!

paulf, that's awesome you answered the call. There is definitely a shortage of umpires. Around here, they're begging for ANYBODY to come out - no experience required. If only my back was in better shape...
