Yesterday a neighbor gave me one nice Kajari melon, since he knew I never tried it. The melon was beautiful and smelled heavenly, with a spicy sweet fragrance that resembled that of Honeydew melons--but better. Since the melon was fully ripe, as soon as I got home I cut it up to eat it. The flesh was beautiful, soft and creamy, with a great texture, but when I bit into it... no sweetness, not even a hint of it. It was like eating a very fragrant, soft cucumber. I was truly puzzled. Everything about that Kajari was telling me this is a delectable, sweet fruit, but, no. I searched online and found sources stating that "When ripe, the flesh has a sweet taste reminiscent of honeydew with mild, musky, and apple-like nuances", and my Kajari melon was definitely ripe. What gives?

That is weird! All of mine have been sweet; not as sweet as cantaloupes, as a rule, but none that were not sweet. But then, I only got 2 melons off one plant, one on the counter ripening, and the other in the fridge. The other plant I've gotten 9 melons from, so far, and still at least 3 on that plant. I might save the seeds from some of those fruits, since that plant is so much better. I'll see if those other melons are sweet, or not.

What's your weather been like during the ripening period, @octave 1? Some melons don't get sweet if they don't get enough heat, and others are bland if they get too much water.
But in S Jersey I would have guessed you have had plenty of heat lately?

Definitely enough heat here!

Laura_in_FL, currently the temperature here is really nice for people (in the low 80s), but maybe not ideal for melons. In addition to that, it has been raining on and off for days, with some torrential downpours. I guess I got that one unlucky Kajari melon that just couldn't not turn sweet.

That second melon, that only had 2, was very sweet, when I tried it tonight.
