I'm thinking on giving these a try, which do you think is best in a crowded raised bed?

which do you think is best in a crowded raised bed? I [glow=green,2,300]Love[/glow] limas. I grow several varieties a year... but not in a crowded raised bed. IMHO, from a space taken to yield perspective, they are a labor of love. How long is your growing season?

Can you trellis them? That would save you space as they go vertical. You would get a nice large harvest over as relatively long harvest.
If space is an issue, I would stray away from bush limas. They are off and on, just sitting there taking up space.
But either way, I certainly recommend growing some. They are one of my favorite smacks while out in the field; store bought frozen doesn't come close to your home grown; they can be frozen or dried for winter use.

Dude, I had a bumper crop in Zone 5 in 2008. I grew them in and amongt my herb garden. Trellised them on a homemade frame of 2x2's and nylon mesh. About 6 foot tall by 5 foot wide? They were so happy they were doubling over on themselves, ;D
Taller would be better I think. Easier to pick when they aren't all tangled. Yet I was more than pleased with the results I got. The variety was Sieva from Seed Savers Exchange.

aren't butter beans from the lima family? It's my understanding that butter beans are another name for lima beans in the South.

Ciao all-
I'm interested in growing Christmas Limas this year. It's a very pretty bean and limas are a main ingredient in succotash, which I like very much. Have any of you grown this variety and can offer some hints on growing them with success?

My sister made some fresh lima beans with ham last fall and it was delicious. That is when I decided I would grow some this summer. I have King of the North and White Dixie Baby Butterbean.

Bush limas need minimum 8" spacing and no wider than a double row. Best I've found is Pennsylvania Dutch Red. Of the pole types, White Willow Leaf and Florida Speckled are the most prolific, Sieva the least prolific. Christmas does best on at least 8' support.
