My veg & flower garden has a huge, healthy comfrey plant. Two days ago, it was about 6' tall and 6' wide, and in bloom. And dozens of bumble bees buzzing around and feeding on the flowers. Next thing you know, it fell over. There was no great wind or anything. Have any of you had this experience? I am going to chop it off as it is causing problems in its fallen state, and I'm sure it will regrow, but I sure wish I knew how to prevent this.

I can't offer any insights as to what happened to your plant. However, I believe it will grow back if you give it a pruning (as opposed to chopping it off). Comfrey is great for the compost heap because it decomposes at a higher heat than most plants do.
I had three nice santolina bushes, really full. Suddenly they all developed big depressions/holes in the centers of the bushes. (Santolinas only grow a couple of feet tall.) I was puzzled for several days until I finally discovered what had changed the bushes. The dogs were laying on them, smack in the middle, as though the bushes were dog beds!

Great detective work, dogwoman. It was the dogs all along...
Not in my case. Yes, I have begun pruning my giant comfrey and am putting the leave & stalks on my attempted compost heap. Thanks for your advice.

Just curious, did your comfrey plant recover?

Did it recover? Is the pope a catholic? Does a bear, er, use the forest as a toilet? Bigger and better comfrey than ever. And a whole slew of new ones coming up.

And be careful where you put those cuttings because chances are, they'll root and you'll have more than one giant comfrey I chop mine up (large pieces) and use as compost accelerant or use them for compost tea.
