It is too late in the season for sowing seed for fruit. You can purchase melon plants for September/early October harvest. Some types of strawberries (everbearing) produce in spring and fall.

They tend to be fall or spring planted. if speed is your need: start with rasberry or blackberry. You might eat a couple this year, but next will be better. Blueberry is about at asparagus speed (year 3 or 4) as are beach plum. Peach, apricot, paw paw, are about a five year from plant-out wait. Apple, on standard feet are about a seven year haul (dwarf root stock are a year or two faster). Nuts are about a ten year wait, however they should still be in production when your grandchildren are elderly.

Almond trees can produce nuts as early as five years old.

Hazel nuts, corylus, is also about a five year wait from seed. In zone 8, you could also be looking at bigger turkish cultivars.
Here in SE-OH, the indigenous hazelnut gets maybe as big as my thumbnail.
