Two pics out Mom's back window of female Pileated Woodpecker in December, 2009. The male has a red moustache and forehead. These huge birds can be up to ~18.5" (47cm) long. Awesome! I've only seen a few times in her yard. Once I was coming in when it was on the light pole. Its call startled me. Thought there was a pterodactyl! ;D

They have been sighted in a State Park 15 miles from me, but none ever come into my area. We have five types of woodpecker frequenting my suet cakes, but I want a pileated.

Nice photos!
A few years ago I was walking down our country road, which has bush on both sides. All of a sudden I saw this...entity pecking away on a tree at the edge of the path. It was so big I nearly fainted, I thought it was a mutant from exposure to radiation or something.
I had never seen one before and on looking in my bird book found out it was, yes a magnificent Pileated Woodpecker.

Here's a male today. Notice the red forehead and moustache. He tried to swallow that huge piece of suet, but he just couldn't do it! ;D

Here are pictures from today taken out Mom's kitchen window. This is the fourth day-in-a-row of seeing the male Pileated Woodpecker. I need to put sunflower seed in the Flying Saucer. I like the Starling in flight above Woody Woodpecker. Yeah, we still have some snow. A month ago I thought we were done with it. A little later in the day he was back to feast on the suet cake. He's getting ready to bolt. The feeder has sunflower seed now. And he's a blur as he kicks off the suet and flies. Check out that white underneath his wings.

Yesterday I was walking to the Post Office in town. I was surprised when I heard a whoosh of wings and saw a blur. A Pileated Woodpecker that sounded like a Thunderbird! He had been working on a tree by the sidewalk at face height. I saw two large holes and many smaller ones. No wonder I had been noticing wood chips on the ground/walk lately.

Woody out Mom's window in May, 2021. A welcome sight. August, 2021. A couple Woodpeckers on the peanuts having a face-off.

Today around 4p, Woody paid us a visit and added some color to this dreary day. Mom and my nephew got to see him eating suet. 👍

Snowy Owls live in the Arctic but migrate south when food is scarce. 2 years ago there was one in the middle of a field about an hour from where I live. I talked DH into going there and I got to see a Snowy Owl for the first time. For bird watchers seeing a Snowy Owl is a BIG deal. I was thrilled but I could just barely make out his features by looking through another birders telescope but I could still tell that it was a Snowy so I was happy. On Dec 31 some Amish schoolchildren saw a Snowy Owl on the roof of their house. She was sitting and sleeping under a solar panel on their roof during the day. We drove there on Sunday but did not have any luck, She was not there. Darn. On Tuesday I saw the rare bird alert on my phone that she was back and I dropped everything, grabbed my binoculars and drove there. It was only 20 miles away. Male birds are supposedly more white and immatures and females have a lot of black barring like this one does. Since this house is fairly close to the road I was able to see the bird perfectly with just my binoculars. Of course there were photographers there and I asked permission to take a photo of one man's viewfinder. It's not a great photo but it's better than I could take with just my phone. She is sitting under a solar panel and the object on the left is a bracket attaching the panel to the roof. Most Snowy owls are found sitting on the ground but this one seems to like the roof. This is the only Snowy Owl seen in all of PA so far this year. Snowy Owl by Brownrexx, on Flickr

brownrexx That's a nice picture. I feel so lucky to see such beauty in nature. Here's Woody chowing down today. He had pieces of suet coming down his belly. He has his tail up for balance. I can see a chunk of suet on it. 😃

My big nephew took this picture out our kitchen window on May 15. A Red-winged Blackbird was pecking at the Pileated Woodpecker and the Redwing won! Woody left. We see Redwings chasing Crows away. They'll even go after Bald Eagles!

We finally had sight of the pileated woodpeckers a month ago at the suet cake feeder. First sighting ever. Very rare in our area. It was a treat to see ol' Woody. Maybe again next winter.

A month ago, I got this picture out Mom's window of three Woodpeckers. The Pileated is on the suet cake on the right, the Hairy is upside down eating suet in the middle and the Downy is clinging to the thistle feeder on the left waiting her turn for suet.

Wow, that's cool that you got three different species of woodpecker in one photo!
