I didn't heat up the kitchen either. We ordered take out fried chicken, fries and coleslaw and brought it home. It was good comfort food. We did the same! It’s coming a toad floater here this evening too.

spike , what we wouldn’t give for some rain. No idea when the last rain was. Enjoy it while you can, August is still comin! @imp , don’t recall what part of the country you are located in, would you normally be warmer that when I am at? I am in north Texas, Wichita Falls, and normally, we are sweating away like mad now. We even have a Hotter'N'Hell 100 mile bike rise in August. Almost every year, even with the required rest stops, several get heat exhaustion.
They actually travel and pay money to do that to themselves; this year may be a record turn out. <shakes head> ahh to each their own brand of insanity.

I made my first pasta salad of the summer, with the raw tomatoes, garlic, and basil, and olive oil, this time with some anchovies chopped up in it, as well. I also put some cooked kamut (just to use up the last half cup in the jar), and a can of cannellini, and a can of black beans, rinsed. When the pasta was finished, I put these other 3 ingredients in, just to heat them up, then drained all of it, and combined it with the raw tomato mix. One of my favorite summertime dishes. 3 lbs tomatoes, diced up, salted and drained, with a lot of garlic, anchovies, and some olive oil. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Basil, and a little bit of Thai basil, ready to cut up for adding to the tomatoes. by pepperhead212, on Flickr First pasta salad of the season, using tomatoes, garlic, and basils, from this season. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Last night and this noon were the same thing. That was broiled salmon, mashed potatoes with chicken gravy, peas, dinner roll, hot black tea with two honey. Hospital fare still tastes OK. Only good thing about being in there.

paquebot, Good luck Martin! I hope they let you go home soon. I’m surprised they let you eat after having surgery.

Surgery was around 11AM yesterday. If there are no major complications, then it is usually just an overnight stay. I could have feigned a lot of pain and kept for another night but needed some sleep. Now hurting but I can do that either here or there.

Today and tomorrow we are actually supposed to have sun and no rain. I am house cleaning like a crazy woman so I can do yard work tomorrow if it dries up some. Totally exhausted and not even thinking about dinner and My Bro! Gosh I love that Man! Brought us over some of his famous ham and bean soup AND homemade cornbread! #heaven

I have been gardening here since 1963 and there never has been a zucchini plant. Still manage to be forced to eat some every year. Son dropped off 3 which is 2 too many. Made a dish with tomatoes, celery, and onions. Not bad! May now find use for the other two.

We like Zucchini pretty good. We did 4 plants this year. About 100 pounds are so in the deep freeze. Gave lots to Family. Grilled a ton of them. Made Zoodles a few times. Fried a bunch, we make mock tader chips. Very versatile.

We're having burgers on the grill if it's not raining at grilling time. I'm going to try quick-pickling some onion slices as a "new and different" topping for my burger. (I'm having my burger bunless tonight so I need to liven it up somehow.)
I've had quick-pickled onions in restaurants and really enjoyed them, but I've never made any at home.

Today it was fajitas with peppers and onions from the garden, home made salsa, and store-bought tomatoes (only down side). Tonight fresh zucchini, beets, green beans, cucumbers with a hamburger from a locally raised beef. Blackberry cobbler form our own vines for dessert. Looks like the tomatoes will be ready in a week or two.

Dunno what you'd call it. Tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, zucchini, onions, and rice. Two meals in the same week with zucchini in it. That's usually par for 3 years!~

Speaking of spam ... you guys reminded me I had a can of Spam Light in my cupboard, so for lack of any other supper ideas I made spam hash. Fried potatoes, peppers, onions, frozen sweet corn and spam chunks! Usually I have added some scrambled eggs, but since I already had two for breakfast this morning I skipped the eggs.

Today I made a one dish pasta dish, in the Instant Pot, based on a recipe from Milk Street's book Fast & Slow. I saw them do this on a show yesterday, and remembered that it was one that I marked to make, once I started getting my cherry tomatoes coming in. I changed it, but only slightly. I increased the tomatoes and garlic slightly, plus I added just a tsp of minced fresh rosemary to the 2 tb of fresh sage. I also changed the type of pasta - I never have bucatini on hand! The gemelli did well, but I wasn't sure how it would work - it was hard to get it all under the water, as recommended. Turns out, it cooked evenly, so nothing to worry about. Here's the changed recipe. A change I'll make next time is switch the crushed red pepper flakes to some morita flakes I often use, since this has the smoked paprika in it, but that smokiness wasn't really noticeable. Not much color in it, because about 90% of the tomatoes are many of those gold tomatoes I grew. But they do have incredible flavor. Didn't use any sunsugars, since that has more sugar, but less flavor. Instant Pot Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes and Fresh Sage1/3 c extra virgin olive oil 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 3/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (or to taste) 2 large or 3 medium bay leaves 20 oz halved cherry tomatoes, about 2 pints 1 tb kosher salt 1/2 tsp sugar 3 cups water 2 tb fresh sage, chopped 1 tsp fresh rosemary, minced 1 tsp smoked paprika Sharved Pecorino Romano cheese, for serving A. Heat the olive oil in the IP on sauté/high mode. When it begins to shimmer, add the garlic, bay leaves, and pepper flakes, and cook, stirring, until the garlic just turns to a golden brown, about 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, salt, sugar, and water, and stir to mix. Then add the pasta, and stir it in, pressing the pieces below the surface as well as you can. Hit cancel, then cover the pot. Set manual high, for 5 minutes. B. When finished, vent the steam, then open the pot. Stir in 4 tsp sage, and the rosemary, plus the smoked paprika. Re-cover for 3 minutes, then test the pasta for doneness; if necessary, cover another minute or two. Adjust salt (remembering the pecorino is coming later), and remove bay leaves, before serving, putting a pinch of the reserved sage on top of each bowl, along some shredded pecorino. Mostly leftovers today, plus all those tomatoes and refrigerator pickles I have been making. But since the weather was nice for one more day, I decided to grill some chicken. I got this idea when adding some veggies to the freezer - I had to take some things out! This is one of my favorites - simply chicken marinated in a simple cilantro pesto, before grilling, and a simple sauce, which is just a sugar syrup made by boiling sugar, water, and vinegar with crushed Thai peppers and minced garlic. Super simple, and delicious on seasoned grilled meats. Thai grilled chicken thigh, with some nam jeem gratiem on it. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Neighbor had outdoor shower party and invited me over. Pulled pork, grilled chicken, and baked beans. Pork had taken 12 hours to prepare and was out of this world!

pepperhead212, I used to eat pasta & tomatoes quite a bit. Not as fancy as what you made though . I’d just boil some noodles, drain, add a can of tomatoes, bring back up to heat, season with lots of black pepper and call it a day .

hairymooseknuckles Once the tomatoes start coming in during the summer, not a day goes by that I don't eat something made with them! A couple of days ago I made another pasta dish, that I make variations of throughout the summer - raw tomato pasta, which is cooked slightly by dumping the hot pasta on the pasta mix, always with a bunch of garlic and basil, as well. I always have some legume and grain added to it, as well, instead of all pasta. Pasta salad, with some chana dal, spelt, kalamata olives, anchovies, garlic, and 3 basils, added to all those tomatoes. by pepperhead212, on Flickr
