You all have seen pics of the new house, well I'm sitting underneath the big oak enjoying the 73' weather and a nice fresh cup of coffee

I picked my first ripe Sweet Beverly tomatoes on April 1, still waiting for more to ripen. I have Native Sons coloring up and the San Marzanos are loaded up. I'm anxious to try these, the plants are huge and the fruit look great. They all get fertilized again today, got a lot of mixing to do! Still picking loads of chard, lettuce mix, radishes and bunching onion. My other onions are bulbing up and should be pulling some next month.
My oriental poppies and still blooming and beautiful, the wildflowers are pretty much spent and almost have them all pulled out. My calla lilly bloomed for the first time this year, beautiful! Tall purple iris are still blooming and the zinnias reseeded with a vengeance so they need thinned and I have a few bargain marigolds to get planted. Having fun though!

STILL 10 days to the average last frost date here. All of my fruit trees have bloomed and set fruit. Tractor had a flat, but a neighbor--Lord love you, Tony!--disced it up nicely for me! Time to put up the mater trellises.
The mater seeds I started in the house are on the porch to take advantage of the lovely temperatures--Matt's Wild broke ground yesterday, green grape and gold nugget and bonny's best/john baer are coming up today.
Gotta restart the asparagus and herb seeds--the seed was a bit old so I'll sow more per cell this time and hope.
The goji seeds I had coming up gorgeously got knocked over--total loss; might have to reorder from Bountiful gardens. The serviceberries are starting to come up though, and I'm hoping the hawthorne seeds start sprouting soon.
Going to plant the fingerling potatoes I found at the store today...red white and blue mixed in one bag--I just couldn't resist.

Yesterday I planted 6 serrano peppers in the garden. I put old hay as mulch around my cherokee purple plants and other tomato plants. They are looking so good! Lots of blooms. I don't see any little baby tomatoes yet but I am sure they are coming! I hope they are coming!

Done a lil weeding and checked at which directly seeded seeds have sprouted... almost all have, pulled a handful of Easter Egg Radishes... go figure , it was a beautiful sunny 70' outside so I cranked up the riding mower and gave the yard it's first cutting.

enlarged it by 33 sf. Just trying to calculate how much soil we will need for that area of a raised bed. Think 17 cu ft of dirt should do it plus leaf mold. It's 3ft x 11 ft x 6 inches deep. What do you think??

If you are talking about buying it or having it trucked in then increase your calculation by 30%. The is the usual conversion from LVM(loose vehicular measure) to FME (field measured embankment) maybe a bit less since you aren't compacting it.

The one chart I used online gave a similar example, Thanks Gulfie. They said for a 3'x6'x10" raised bed to use 9 bags (20 qt size/18L) plus compost and vermiculite to make a total of 15cf So I figure if we buy 13 of 25L bags then mix it well with leaf mold for volume that should do the trick for our patch?
We also planted 50 Tall Peas and 2 Black Currant bushes this weekend. Also Transplanted Rogue Raspberry canes out of the veggie garden and back where they should be growing, planted pansies in the front flower bed, a pelargonium in a deck container and then transplanted (indoors) 28 sweet pepper and tomato plants.
Many years there is still snow for Easter, this is a treat to be able to garden outside although if only with cold tolerant plants that we worked.

So here's what the final total was. About 2 inches of leaf mold, then 12 bags (25L size) of Triple Mix (peat, manure, black earth) . Paintman didn't think that was deep enough, so he added 6 of 20L bags Black Earth that we bought cheap to grow potatoes in a barrel. Good thing I don't need the black earth all at once. It's for adding to the barrel, to 'hill' them up as they grow. The original calculation of 17cf = 481L of soil. We've used 420L of soil plus some leaf mold This afternoon I will be reworking the garden design for this year since now I have 3 separate raised beds in which to grow instead of the two I had yesterday, Yeah

To answer your question Richard, I have no idea what I'm going to plant in the new raised bed? I started more tomatoes than I had room for. And I also want to put in some vine crops so maybe I can put the vine crops up front and leave the back beds for the tomatoes, peppers, garlic, greens and herbs ? I was just about to get my 2012 garden plan out and look it over to see what would be the most logical to change. I'll let you know later. And yes, I agree, lawn is overrated, but I still need a place for the dog to pee and a soft spot for tiny grandbabies to fall.

The cold Canadian air moved in and made things like very early spring weather instead of the nice warmer weather we have been enjoying. I did get some raised beds completed and one cold frame built. So, not all that bad...Got 2 loads of compost scattered so all is not lost....Redesigning most of front yard garden but I did buy one tomato plant and need to get others started from seed very soon as well as pepper and other veggies and flowers to transplant in mid May. I'm getting behind this year.

Kinda slow here. Daffodils are still looking good. I hope everybody's gardens made it through the night of frost. Looks like tonight is another cold one all the way into the Carolinas and Georgia, even.
