I also have a flat top stove and I know that they recommend against cast iron pans but I figured that it was probably because they might scratch. I don't have a pressure canner but I have used the water bath canner a couple of times before I quit canning. It did take longer to heat my water bath canner because the bottom is not completely flat and it does not make perfect contact with the flat burner.

brownrexx, That makes sense! Hubs bought me an electric water bath canner and I love it. Makes life so much easier and frees up the stove. Plus I did buy a heavy duty hot plate specifically to pressure can with. My cousin took all my cast iron pans >,< so my stove top is safe.

I read this and "court-ordered" flashed through my mind. I thought "oh no, the Code Enforcement people got her!", lol. Glad to read the "real" story, ha.

Peeled some apples gifted to me and made a 3rd variation of my cat apple pie. I found new cat cookie cutters this summer, but I don't like these as well as the previous simpler ones. I should have left off the small amount of streusel I sprinkled in the gaps on top, it burned too fast because of the sugar.

Deal of the day/month/season? We took a shopping trip to a town fifty miles away because the town has three stores with some pretty good deals and it was a nice day for a short road trip. One of the places last year had soilless mix on close-out so I thought,"why not see if they had it again." Last year it was 1 cu. ft. mix for $5/bag...it was miracle-gro. This year it was the Wal-Mart private label Expert Gardener 2 cubic foot bag for $4/bag. I loaded up the back of the RAV. The bags were hidden way in the back out of sight, so if we travel to the town again I will drive the truck and fill it up. I have used that mix several times and have had pretty good luck. Better than $12/bag in the spring.

I finally was feeling a bit better and had to go get some medicine for our pup. Was dying for some Chinese food so I drug my bro out of his house and made him go with me. Since the place we were going is a buffet, I wore a mask and surgical gloves while filling my to go box. Wasn't gonna take a chance in case I am contagious. (I am confident that I am not but didn't want to take a chance with other people's health) Anyway this place has the best chicken and mushroom dish. I would kill to know what the sauce is as it is delicious. Was nice being out and it did me a world of good.

Super cute pie september , I am not an expert baker but I have heard that brushing pie crust with either an egg wash or milk makes it brown nicely. I am not sure which one is better but it ay work out better than the crumb topping.

I use an egg wash on my pie crusts. Sometimes I lightly sprinkle the egg wash with sugar crystals.

In order to keep the plantings around the estate alive over the winter the sprinkler was on most of the day today. No rain in sight...no snow either.

Ive been walking around all day thinking it was Saturday. I almost corrected our waitress this morning when she greeted us. Im sure glad i kept my mouth shut. (Which is pretty hard for me.) My wife had to correct me today because I keep cussing the TV cause Gunsmoke ain't on. I was about ready to throw the remote at the TV.

I pulled all my tomato plants, except for the 6 cherry tomatoes, and a few other things - 3 trash cans full of lawn trash. I also blew some of the leaves in on the lawn (off of some of my garden, and off from the the fences and the house), then mowed the lawn, and leaves. The lawn hadn't grown that much, and barely needed it, but rain is coming tomorrow, so I wanted to take care of it today.

9-year-old granddaughter and I picked saffron yesterday. She likes the taste of saffron and I wanted to show her how it grows. She had a great time picking it. Each flower has only 3 saffron strands and the bees were also working on the flowers gathering pollen. She is sometimes afraid of bees so I was so happy that she didn't mind sharing these flowers with the non aggressive honeybees. She was watching them gather pollen and was not a bit afraid. We gathered quite a bit of saffron and made some saffron orzo for dinner so I got to show her the entire process from growing to cooking with the saffron. 20221029_143815 by Brownrexx, on Flickr Saffron Flowers Brownrexx, on Flickr Saffron by Brownrexx, on Flickr

Nice, brownrexx! That's a lot of $$ worth of saffron there. It's really cool the way you're teaching her how to cook and where her food comes from at the same time. I bet a lot of her friends have never even heard of saffron and would be amazed to see that it comes from such a pretty flower. Oh, and it's a lot easier when the 9 year old does all of the squatting down, right? paulf, that was a steal you got on that soilless mix - hope you can get back with the truck and fill it up before it's all gone. spike, I hope you got your medications yesterday and you're feeling better today! september, that is a cute pie! I third the recommendation for egg wash on pie crusts - it makes the crust brown nicely and also gives it a little shine. I also like to use egg wash for some breads, and when I bake dinner rolls to get the same effect. Just use a very light coating so it doesn't run/drip. (If the egg wash runs, the droplets bake into little bits of scrambled egg, which look gross.)

Laura_in_FL, we also worked on some math because small envelopes of saffron contain about 3 strands and cost $3. She was estimating how much our saffron was worth. It was fun and I was surprised at how much she liked it. She went back out after dinner to see if any more flowers opened and she got a few more strands.

Hey there brownrexx, I’ve been away from puter all day and just saw your post on saffron. I have seen saffron rice at the grocery store, but I can’t remember ever tasting saffron. The flowers you have are very beautiful! I need to research those and see if it will grow here. You are teaching your granddaughter some valuable lessons. Some very nice memories are being made, some of which will last a lifetime.

hairymooseknuckles , it is a different taste than anything else. PA Dutch cooking uses it a lot and so does middle eastern and some Latino cooking. It really turns the rice or other items yellow even though saffron threads are dark red. In my area they sell little yellow envelopes of saffron near the registers since it is so popular but you may find it in the spice aisle in your area. The flowers are a type of crocus called saffron crocus but they grow and bloom in the Fall so it's nice to see them when everything else is gone. They don't even seem to mind frost. I have them planted right in my flower bed. They do spread pretty quickly and I have plenty so if you look into it and they do grow in your area, I would be glad to send you some bulbs.

For the past several years rather than rake all the leaves from the back yard full of trees, I have gotten out the riding lawn mower and basically blown the leaves into a great big pile. Then over the embankment on the east end of the property. Much easier than raking and today, with the help of a strong wind out of the northwest, is leaf day.

ust got back from a trip to the hospital ER. Mom had a UTI that turned septic. Two days of IV antibiotics. The doctor said one more day and it would have been "difficult". Anyhow the fever finally broke while I was with her about 2 or 3 this morning. I had to comeback down here. I had left the dog 2 bowls of water and a large bowl of food. He waited for me come come back before he ate anything, about 30 hours.

Went to town and filled the back of the pick-up with water softener salt bags before the snow hit today. That puts weight on the rear wheels and then in the spring it all goes into the basement for the water softener. Only and inch or so tonight but much more to come later.

Heading back to Hattiesburg. Mom is home with oral antibiotics, an oxygen tank, and home health is supposed to start coming by. One sister runs a preschool and is short of personnel due to a flu epidemic, the other came down with pneumonia.I told them I would stay 3 days. About to cook and carry a turkey there.
