My relatives mostly grew white half runner green beans (Western North Carolina). My maternal grandmother didn't like to eat any other green bean. My father grew only white half runners, so this is also my favorite.
I am curious about greasy beans since they are a shelley bean like White Half Runners. Has anyone grown both and would be willing to share any comparisons?
Thanks!

I've grown white half runners. We liked other beans better as green beans.

hairymooseknuckles, what are your top three favorite greasy varieties, and why? Any of them earlier than the others? Thanks!

Hensaplenty, here's 3 I like. You can't go wrong though. Listen up now, you'll have to string Greasy beans unless you grow something like Lazy Wife Greasy. I switch beans like I change clothes, always on the hunt for the next bean. Mosey on over to Sustainable Mountain www.heirlooms.org/store/c15/Greasy_Beans.htmlDoyce Chambers is my favorite Greasy. Pink Tip Greasy NC Speckled Long Greasy Cutshort

Thanks! hairymooseknuckles. Yeah, you have to string white half runners, too, but I don't mind!

Blue Greasy Grits, good as a snap bean, haven't tried them as a full bean and although on the small side as a shelly, yummy steamed with a bit if butter. Snap. Shelly. Dry. The only thing, when you go to shell these do it in a deep bowl or you will find them in the oddest places, ask me how I know this.

White hull Pink Tip half runners, can't comment on the taste just grown for seed. Not enhanced this is the true color of the dried pod.

The other greasy I've grown and tried is North Carolina Speckled Long Greasy Cutshort.Acouple of pix... Dried Seed. At the full bean stage, good example of what a greasy pod looks like.

The beans all look great but I hate the name. Greasy beans do not sound very appealing!

hairymooseknuckles, yep Barksdale is one of George's, Berta Talaska is a Portugese heirloom brought to Canada over 50 years ago by a woman of the same name. The only place up here I know that sells this one is out of stock until 2019. I sent George some, my seed is buried in the freezer until the next time I grow it. It's a great snap and shelly, sucks as a full bean and I don't know what it would be like as a dry bean. Annette

hairymooseknuckles , yep, grew those too, but there are much better tasting purple podded varieties. I only grew them once, pods were about 8" long and I was a little disappointed in the flavor and texture.
