Ciao all-
Today was cooking day. I started a big new batch of napa kimchi in the morning. Two to three days and it should be ready. I baked one loaf of banana blueberry bread with some over-ripe bananas in the afternoon, and am just about to take the tamale pie out of the oven for dinner, made with plenty of Duane's nicely diced frozen jalapenos, a few habs thrown in for some zip, a 250ml jar of my picante sauce, and a litre jar of my whole king humberts in puree. I could have tossed in a teaspoon or so of his hot paper lantern powder, but forgot. I think the habs should do nicely.

I made a vegetarian red Thai curry (well, almost - shrimp paste and fish sauce are always in my curries, so it really wasn't vegetarian), using some of those things from my garden - shogoin, plus some of the stalks from the different greens - plus some bell peppers, carrots, a large onion cut into chunks, and some tofu I pressed and froze (keeps it from falling apart as much). The shogoin turned out more like kohlrabi than a turnip (which they look like), since it tasted almost like a potato at the end of cooking (kohlrabi gets like this, too, after a long braising), and got rather starchy, thickening the sauce as it broke up. I never cooked them like this before - always in SFs, where they were sliced or julienned, and remained crispy with just a minute of cooking.
Oh, and of course, jasmine rice...or did I have to say that?

Ciao all-
Today I made a new batch of kimchi and a lovely Vietnamese spring soup with Gai Lan, Snow Pea Shoots, fresh Mint, fresh Thai Basil, Green Onions, Banh Pho noodles, lots of garlic, LOTS of ginger, large shrimp, and vegetable broth. I added a couple heaping teaspoons of Tuong Ot Toi (Vietnamese chili sauce) at the end. I cannot WAIT for fresh Gai Lan out of the garden!! The last time I made this, I didn't have the fresh herbs, just dried and it makes a HUGE difference. I know it'll be even better when the herbs are harvested seconds before they go in the pot.

I could never live up north... I won't eat tomatoes fresh unless they are homegrown or local, just can't, had some Texas seedless watermelon tonite too but wasn't too impressed with it, got it at Kroger's, going to wait now for the local Pennington watermelons before I attempt to eat anymore watermelon.

I only eat homegrown tomatoes from my garden or my friends' except Mom bought some commercial tomatoes lately. To humor her, I ate a small one and it was awful!

Butterbeans with sausage, New potatoes potato salad, stuffed jalapenos, and salad, even the kid ate his veggies :-) My BFF came over and ate with us and was like WOW. I got the taters, butterbeans, and jalapenos all from the farm stand. Also had some baby pickled beets with it, yummy

Paprika seasoned chicken leg quarters. A stir-fry made from green onions, Pak Choy, and Chinese Red Noodle beans (stir-fry veggies from garden) seasoned with ginger powder, white pepper, cooking sherry, sesame oil, soy sauce, a little corn starch to tighten the liquid and some sesame seeds. Sage dressing (from a box) and some fresh tomatoes from the garden. I'm a happy camper. That was good.

Aw, they know what you like, that's cute! We had pulled pork sandwiches that couldn't have been easier to prepare since they used my canned barbeque sauce from last year's tomatoes and peppers and Duane's smoked pork shoulder we had in the freezer. That was a fantastic way to end a very fun but busy drive out to the country.

Lentils with tomatoes and carrots and Italian seasonings. Sauteed patty-pan and marrow squash. Cornbread. And a cucumber.
For not having any meat in sight, it was pretty darn good!

It's going to be a left over night, too hot to cook. Hmm? Leftover grilled turkey leg, leftover veggie pizza, and left over navy bean soup.

Sliced cucumbers on the side.
