DH and I have each had jury duty one time. I had to show up and sit around until 4 pm each day if not chosen for a jury. I was chosen for a child's sexual abuse trial on day 2. I was fascinated by the people with lame excuses and trying to get out of jury duty. They would show up with T-shirts or baseball hats with crude slogans or dirty jeans even though jeans were not permitted and it was right in the instructions that we were all given. They were sent home to change and threatened with longer jury duty if they did not behave.
DH had Federal duty so he had to travel to Philadelphia daily for about a week. It was a bank robbery trial. All of the travel and loss of work was aggravating (he is self employed) but the trial was interesting.

I have seen the lame excuses when I have gone to jury duty before. But yesterday I didn't hear anything like that. There was one woman there who said she was moving overseas this Friday - the judge said that was a pretty good excuse and let her leave.
There was another guy who wasn't trying to get out of jury duty, but he did let the clerk know right off that he was a bail bondsman. The clerk said although being a bail bondsman isn't a statutorily valid excuse, it would be extremely unlikely that he would be picked for any trial. So the clerk was going to talk to the judges, and they might just let him leave and counting it as his service, since he did show up and was willing to serve. I got called away to a different room so I didn't hear the outcome.
Another interesting (to me) tidbit was when the clerk told us there were 85 prospective jurors there, causing one of the other prospective jurors asked why she was juror #193 if there were only 85 people there. The clerk said that only about 40% of the people they send summonses to actually show up. I knew that a fair number of people get exemptions, excusals, or request to reschedule. But I didn't realize it was that many.
Apparently about 20% of the folks getting summonses turn out to be exempt because they have moved out of county! That percentage seemed amazingly high, until I remembered that we have a small Navy base and a large Air Force base here. Which means we have thousands of residents who only live here for 2-4 years.

We had one woman who asked to be excused because she claimed that she was was hearing impaired but yet she sat in the waiting room chatting the whole day. She was reprimanded by the judge and I don't think she was put on a jury but they made her sit there everyday until 4:00 p.m.

We actually finished the trial today, so we don't have to return tomorrow. It was indeed interesting. The trial was for 5 five different felony charges. The most serious charges we found guilty, but on the two lesser charges we found not guilty. There was some police sloppiness that left room for doubt on those charges. We jurors had a productive discussion during deliberations, and at the end we all felt comfortable that we had reached the right verdicts. And now I won't get summoned again for at least a year. Hopefully longer. But man, I have to say, some of the laws as written are frighteningly broad. For one thing, if you're ever arrested in Florida, be aware that the standards for resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer are incredibly easy to meet. I recommend 100% polite compliance with the officer! Also, I always thought drug paraphernalia was just things like crack pipes, needles, equipment for making drugs, etc. But nope, today I learned that in Florida, drug paraphernalia includes ANY container used for transport, storage, or concealment of a drug. So even a little baggie is drug paraphernalia, and in practice almost all drug possession charges are accompanied by a paraphernalia charge. So be good when you're down here, folks!

So those little ziplocs we use for seeds can be considered drug paraphernalia by some?

So those little ziplocs we use for seeds can be considered drug paraphernalia by some? Well they do play a part in an addictive habit, saving seeds and freezing produce.

So those little ziplocs we use for seeds can be considered drug paraphernalia by some? Yes. But to convict on a drug paraphernalia charge, the state has to prove that the alleged drug paraphernalia either was used in association with illegal drugs, OR prove that the defendant intended to use the alleged paraphernalia in association with illegal drugs. For that reason, very nearly all drug paraphernalia charges accompany other drug charge(s). A drug paraphernalia charge won't "stick" for simply possessing item(s) that have other legitimate uses, unless the state can, beyond a reasonable doubt, tie the item(s) or the owner to drugs. Otherwise mere possession of ziploc bags (of any size), other plastic bags, plastic wrap, pill bottles, etc., could be a felony! But like I said, once the police find drugs in your possession/control, they can and will find something to claim as drug paraphernalia and tack on those extra charges. Because even if there's nothing else, they can charge that whatever the drugs were stored in is drug paraphernalia.

I did nothing outside today, since it was quite cool, and I've been spoiled by that warm weather! Got the usual indoor things done, plus something I started a few days ago, when I pulled the oven knobs off, to "repaint" them. In 39 years, the markings were totally gone, from all the cleaning. I was surprised it was so easy, on the one knob, where the markings were all indented, so I just took the quick dry marking liquid, and over marked them, then wiped the excess off with acetone, and it looks almost new! Numbers and marks worn off the almost 40 year old oven knobs. by pepperhead212, on Flickr One of the oven knobs, looking almost brand new! by pepperhead212, on Flickr Another thing I did today - I got another one of those self-emptying electric rain gauges, as the one I had for the last 9 or 10 years simply started breaking apart. I kept it a year after the plastic started breaking up, but it broke up even more in the fall, so I started watching for deals on one, and just got one this week. I wasn't going to put it out, until I know there is no chance of freezing, in the spring, but today I calibrated it - takes a few times, letting 8 oz of water drip through, and adjusting screws, until the gauge shows 1.68". So that's ready for spring!

Finished migrating over to the new iMac from the old.....I think! A trip to New Orleans was involved. On the way back I picked up a roofing tack. That involved 4 stops for air machines as VW thinks spare tires aren't needed. Then a morning at Walmart which involve going out to the tire shop 4 times to show them how to operate my car.

I actually pulled some weeds and it felt so good to be outside!
I like having a few chickens and they are great bug eaters BUT they seem to really like my flower bed adjacent to the driveway where I have crocus growing. I came home from errands and saw the bed all scratched up and some of the poor crocus laying on top. Grrr, crocus is one of my favorites so I immediately got gloves to replant them and then I noticed the chickweed.
Chickweed is one of my first weeds and it is super hardy. One year I pulled some and left it upside down in January. I laid there through snow, freezing rain and below zero temperatures. Sure enough when it got warmer it started to get green again! If only our garden plants were this determined to grow.
I pulled out three 5 gallon buckets of chickweed and then put a wire fence around the area with the crocus. They are planted right outside of my garage door so that I can enjoy them whenever I pull into the garage. Hopefully now they are safe from the chickens.

Today we are on the way to the old home town to watch our granddaughter play in a volleyball tournament. We have not been back other than to drive through for the 17 years since we left for Nebraska. No doubt there will be nobody we will recognize. All three of our kids are in the Sports Hall of Fame display and the Academics Wall of Fame at the high school where the tourney will be held. Always fun to relive those glory days.
My iMac has been acting up lately. I cannot get Face Book to load. No matter its bad points, that is how I keep in touch with relatives and friends. Funny thing, I get it on my iPad which is cloned to the desktop but not on the desktop itself. I need to get my son-in-law to reestablish the site. All the on-line suggestions have not done a thing. I am not really ready to replace the old iMac...it is only ten years old and does just fine most of the time.

iMacs seem to be related to how new the version of software is on it. Mine started to bog down after the last couple of updates. I would imagine that your iPad is newer.

My DH had some trouble with FB on his phone some time ago and I deleted it and then reloaded, that may help you. Today I decided that I should start my head lettuce and bok choy indoors so I headed to the basement to get my seed starting supplies and discovered that I was out of the pots/cells that I use! Tomorrow I guess that I need to go to Rohrer seeds and pick some up. Soon I will be starting peppers and then tomatoes. I also need a few new seeds so today I am making a list. It is always like this for me. In Jan & Feb I don't feel like thinking about gardening and then March gets here and I want to do everything and feel like I need to hurry!

I'd come home with WAY more than I need, lol. rdback, you are absolutely right. I ended up spending $70 which is way more than I EVER spend on seeds. I did buy a bulk pack of sunflower seeds for DH which was $9 so this ran up the bill a little. He tilled up an area that we decided to quit mowing and he is going to plant sunflower seeds and it is already cover with milkweed for the Monarch butterflies. We quit mowing that hilly area a few years ago and just let it support bees and other insects. I also bought 5 lbs of seed Kennebec potatoes ($8.99) and a new pair of gardening gloves ($7.50). I like to wear gloves when weeding and lately when I take them off there is dirt under my nails so I bought a nice heavy pair today and I hope that they hold up better. I got new seed starting cell packs and trays so I am ready to plant head lettuce and bok choy tomorrow. I was super smart this year when I got out my trays. I poured water in each one to cover the bottom and discovered that 2 of them were leakers. I am so happy that I thought of this before using them to start seeds and having water dripping all over my floor under the racks. It is hard not to go crazy at Rohrer's they have tons of seeds and everything else garden related. They renovated the store a few years ago and now they even have shopping carts. Today is Monday and I didn't expect them to be busy but I was wrong. The store was very crowded. I guess that once we get a few warm days that lots of people have the same idea that I did!

Doesn't sound like you were extravagant at all, brownrexx. It's just that having a nice big store like that reminded you of things you already needed to buy. Better to get it all in one trip than have to make a bunch of trips for 1-2 things each. Of course if you spent that much every week it would add up quick!

So today, I stomped my cute little foot and stood my ground. Hubs who has complained that I was putting Christmas decorations up way to early, refused to take down the tree in his office (Fortress of Solitude) ( ) and YES he lit it up every morning. Well he lost the battle today. Finally Christmas is over at our house!

Today I am going to drive the 1 1/2 hours to Mansfield, snag my son and go see the new John Wick movie in the theater. I really need to see explosions etc on the big screen today. With several batches of shingles off our roof, naturally it is pouring rain.

Transplanted peppers today. Might even have a few tomatoes to re-pot. Everything seems to be really slow this year. Might have to apply a little Miracle-Gro to the next watering.

I usually leave those up until they burn out which means they sometimes stay up until next Christmas. But like brownrexx all the other decorations are taken down in a week to 10 days. What did I do today? I put fertilizer in the strawbales.

I spent the day driving the bro to the parts store and back. Well he had to go pick up a few groceries and snag a brake line since he blew the brakes out in his truck. He managed to put the brake line on but broke a different line. Back to the parts store for another line and brake fluid. OH SNAP! Yep blew yet another brake line and lost all his new brake fluid. Much swearing began.
We did find out that we will get our damage inspection from the insurance company on April 6th! Guess that is a good thing as yet another storm is supposed to hit on Saturday.
But next week I will start some seeds!!

DH spent part of his Saturday morning underneath son #2's vehicle to find an oil leak that had recently cropped up. Son #2 had recently had his oil changed at a new place. Sure enough, they had failed to tighten the oil filter. DH tightened it and replaced the lost oil. We are glad their that mistake only cost us some time and a little extra oil. And we are all definitely going to go to the OLD oil change place from now on.
