It has been a quiet morning so far, with my youngest two sons back in school. This is the latest I ever remember them going back to school after Christmas break. I have enjoyed having them here, but it was time for them to get back to it. Unfortunately DH seems to be coming down with something. He was complaining yesterday of tiredness, which we at first attributed to the hard work he did on Saturday. In the evening he said he just didn't feel well and was starting to get stuffy and headachy. He went in to work this morning, but he just called me (a little after 11 am) saying he is heading home. Hopefully whatever he has will be brief and mild. He usually gets over illnesses pretty quickly. But of course I am going to pump him full of the usual vitamins, immune-boosting supplements, and clear fluids like always. And we already have chicken soup on hand since I overbought in preparation for my dental surgery.

I spent yesterday going through my inventory of tomato seeds, rearranging storage to make it easier to find what I want and made sure all varieties were in air tight containers. While I was at it a list got made of potential grow outs for 2023. Also while I was at it I whittled the list down to a manageable size so later the final list could be pulled from the larger list. In a flurry of ambition I just went ahead and formed up the preliminary final list. So here it is a month ahead of schedule:
Black Cherry Cherokee Purple Indische Fleisch Black Roger's Best Black Indian Dark Violet Aker's West Virginia Black Orange Oxheart Zore's Big Red Sylvan Game Granny's Heart Belarusian Heart Sheryl's Portuguese Egyptian Butter nad Bull's Heart Tsar Kolokol Hays Vjerind Joe's Pink Oxheart Konus Lennie and Gracie's Kentucky Heirloom Japanese Oxheart Yasha Yugoslavian Sgt. Peppers Canadian Heart Amish Salad
Twenty will go into my garden in May, the others will be given to anyone who wants to give them a try.

I've been published! I opened the mail today and received a $50 check from Mother Earth News. I didn't remember doing this but I submitted a picture of "protecting seedlings from cats" and it is going to be in an issue of MEN. I think that this was the picture 20210321_164203 by Brownrexx, on Flickr and this is what happens to unprotected seedlings! 20220428_100402 (2) by Brownrexx, on Flickr

Congratulations, brownrexx! Got out for two miles of walking around town today. Saw some sunshine and this beauty. In January, a Dandelion in bloom and one going to seed! As you can see, our ground is bare here in The Great White North. Before Christmas, we had a Blizzard Warning. We lucked out. The power stayed on and only around five inches of snow fell. It took me a bit over two hours to snowblow. The wind was whipping and the temperature was around 15f. My forehead hurts just thinking of it. Since then, it has all melted. My friend has Tulips pushing up in her yard. We're back up to Moderate Drought, so I'd like to have a little snow at a time.

I took the car to the shop this morning - again - because the dealership finally got the part in for my warranty repair. I sure hope that this part finally solves the problem. Annoyingly, I had to wait two hours for the courtesy driver to take me home. That service department is busy enough that they really ought to have two drivers, at least for the busy morning and late afternoon hours.
Anyway, there went my morning, but it will be worth it if the car is fixed this time.

So my brother is a disabled veteran (No I didn't disable him although he pushes his luck). Today he had to go over an hour away for some special hearing test. Yes I had the pleasure of taking him >,< I had to get up at 6AM and I had been fortunate to not have seen that hour of the day in years. THEN on about 3/4 of the way there we hit an almost white out. Cars/trucks in the ditches, cops with flashing lights everywhere. SHEESH. Finally get there and I had to wait for ages. I did expect that but the waiting room was close to unheated and I was frozen. Headed home YEA and run right back into the white out and more cars/trucks in the ditch. Drive right on out of that mess and fool boy wants to go pick up his rent checks, hit the bank to deposit them, get Chinese food AND get the Phew a sub. Almost kissed my driveway when I made it home and SHOCKER the whiteout hit. Didn't care I was home.

As I mentioned previously, I try to teach my 10 year old granddaughter how to make interesting things from scratch so yesterday we did 2 kitchen projects. It was bitterly cold outside yesterday, so it was a great day to do an oven project indoors. First, we made fortune cookies. I had never made these before but I knew that she would have fun with it, and she did. We loved the cookies, and she had great fun writing the fortunes. Fortune Cookies by Brownrexx, on Flickr Second project was making soft pretzels from scratch, no mixes. That was fun too. First time I ever made these, and we could have made the loops a bit larger because they really puffed up, but they tasted good anyway. She was so excited to see how they turned out. 20230204_144316 (2) by Brownrexx, on Flickr

Great job to both of you, brownrexx! I have seen fortune cookies made on TV, and they seem tricky - you have to get the bake juuuuust right and fold them up fast before they turn hard. But you've clearly got it down pat.

Actually Laura_in_FL, we also had a dish of "seconds" that you didn't see. LOL. You're right, they need to be gently folded in half while still hot enough to bend without breaking and then we bent them on the rim of a measuring cup to make the final bend and that worked great. We only baked 3 at a time so that we had time to work and we also found out that they need to be really thin or they will not cool to a crisp product, they will still be slightly soft. We had fun and the "seconds" tasted just as good at the perfect ones. We both worked at the folding and I had 3 cookie sheets working so I told her it was like an assembly line at a factory so she started calling it Maddy's fortune cookie factory and was so proud of the results.

Technically it's "What Was Done To Me" but that forum doesn't exist. The fiber optic moles bored through the sanitary sewer line in front of my house. As seen on the pictures, my mailbox along with the 20 year old Confederate Jasmine that surrounds it will have to be moved to repair it. Also just out of frame the pomegranate tree is less than 5 feet away. Almost the same thing happened in 2006 and created a sink hole. Anyhow I put a new mail box and post out by the existing one in hopes that they get the message.

Had jury duty this morning. I was picked for a trial that will be held Thursday and Friday. Can't say I am really looking forward to it, but it's an important duty.

Laura_in_FL , I served on a trial jury once, and found it to be a fascinating responsibility. I was impressed with how seriously the jurors took their deliberations. And talking through our various interpretations of how we heard the evidence presented to come up with a unanimous verdict gave me a lot of respect for the jury system. The boring part was waiting around in the jury pool holding room for days while cases were settled by plea bargains instead of going to trial. One day we got as far as bringing the potential jurors up to the courtroom for selection when they decided to plead. I thought I would end my duty weeks without ever sitting on a trial, but finally I did get picked for an assault case.

Wow, it's different here. When you're summoned for jury duty here there is one day for jury selection, and they are only picking juries for the trials that are to start that same week. So every week they bring in a new pool of prospective jurors for that week's trials. If you are not picked for a jury for one of that week's trials, you get sent home. Whether you serve on a jury or just show up for jury selection day, it counts as your jury service for a year. After a year, your name goes back into the prospective juror pool. Names are randomly drawn from the pool, so you might get picked again in a year, or you might go several years between summonses. If you're picked for a jury, the trial takes however long it takes, of course. But trials for most criminal cases take 1-2 days. Civil trial juries are picked from the same pool of prospective jurors, at the same time. Civil trials often take closer to a week. There was a civil trial whose jury was picked this morning. They were expecting to begin that trial after lunch today, and were expecting that trial to take all week. However, one thing that is the same between your area and mine is that most of the cases are settled by plea bargains or "no contest" pleas before going to trial. They never know how many cases will settle between when the summonses are sent out and the day of jury selection, so they have to summon enough prospective jurors for all of the trials scheduled. But some of them ( I don't know how many) did get resolved before today, and another more case was resolved just this morning. So about 3/4 of the jurors who showed up today went home without being picked. _________________________ The timing is sheer coincidence, but just last Friday one of the local judges gave a talk about the justice system to son #3's AP Government class. One of the things that he told them is that only 1% of criminal cases ever make it to trial! I knew the percentage was pretty low, but I always figured it was more like 5%-10%. That 1% figure floored me. So the judge meant it when he said that if every defendant insisted on going to trial, our judicial system would grind to a halt.

In Minnesota, the length of jury duty is variable by county, but not to exceed four months! In our county, you may not have to go in every day, but you are notified by phone and there is a website that tells you which days they expect you in by 8AM. If memory serves, I think the pool of jurors was normally excused sometime before noon if the scheduled trials were settled by plea. Here you have a four year gap before you can be required to serve again.
I got notified again for jury duty last winter, but I declined because if you are over the age of 70 you can decline without a valid excuse. If it would have been any other time of year I would have served, but I didn't want to commit to driving to town in snow storms.

While I have been an expert witness multiple times I have only served on a jury once. It was for the murder of a deputy. The family requested that the death penalty not be considered but a 20 year old was sentenced to life without parole.

Before aging out I got called to duty several times. Most of the time we were to call the courthouse the night before to see whether we had to show up. In Iowa I showed up twice, got sent home both times because a deal was struck before the trial. In Nebraska we also had to call in. I was selected to be questioned twice, rejected once and helped come to a fifteen minute decision once. Interesting process. Made acquaintances with a few of the jurors and visit with them fairly often...small town stuff.
