So far the gal who found Piekny Jas up here has not had any luck germinating them, but she's still trying. I told her she might have to go through quite a few to find any viable ones.

Okay so the bag of soup beans I got aren't even good for soup >,< I have soaked them for over 12 hours and they have been simmering away for at least 2 hours now. Rocks would be softer by now.

Don't that just get your goat? Not even good for soup! I've bought beans that wouldn't cook. I always figured they were old.

aftermidnight, spike, Well, sometimes you have to backup and punt. I have the Gigantes that need growing, so I'll go with them this year.

Update, she finally got one to sprout, she was only trying 3 at a time so there are some viable ones. She's going to send some on to me. I'll try to germinate, and I'll cook a sample to see how long before they take to soften up. We don't know how old these commercial beans actually are, maybe tat has something to do with it. spike, do you still have the real deal coming from Andrey? We might have better luck with those. aftermidnight, As far as I know I still have some coming Andrey? I did everything he asked as far as sending him payment. Sent twice what he asked. Still waiting. I know it can take 2 to 3 weeks so still have fingers crossed! Let me just say that I have total faith in Andrey!! Not so much the mail system.

they have been simmering away for at least 2 hours now. Rocks would be softer by now. I have simmered some beans all afternoon before they were soft. The older they are, the longer they will take to soften and if you have really hard water it will take even longer. Did they ever get soft? I read somewhere that purchased beans can be as much as 10 years old! My home grown beans don't even need to be soaked overnight and they soften fairly quickly with cooking but they are less than one year old.

Yes and no lol! In a way whatever these were they kind of reminded me of fava beans only in that the skins really needed removed. The ones that actually softened, out of the skin were very creamy but tasted like a wet sock. Then there were the ones that just crumbled into bits inside the skin which were really gross nasty NOT tasting. I am going to assume that the language barrier was the issue NOT that I was assumed to be the stupid American girl lol I had attempted to order 3 bags of garden seed and got one bag of old soup beans! Oh well! My cousin tried to hook me up. Now we cross our fingers for Andrey!

When I cooked those old Gigandes they took up the flavor of the stock they were cooked in, they turned out pretty good. I'm thinking Piekny Jas will do the same.

spike, it's possible that you just don't like the taste of those really big beans. I know that I don't. I grew Scarlet Runner beans one year and hated them. They were big and mushy and I ended up feeding them to the chickens. They loved them. Lots of people like the Scarlet Runner beans but I just don't so I stick to the smaller beans and I really like them. Another thing I don't like about the bigger beans is the skins. The seem to slip off of the beans. I don't like Fordhook lima beans for the same reason - big, mushy and the skins slip off but I do like the taste and texture of baby lima beans.

I just received the Piekny Jas bought in bulk down island from me, comparing them to the Gigandes I have I wouldn't want to get them mixed up as they look pretty much the same. My Gigandes are older seed and they have shrunk as they aged, at least the one's I'm cooking with have. The difference between Gigandes and other runners is the skins on Gigandes are thin and dissolve in your mouth where as other runners I have have a thicker skin, not so tender. The thing about Gigandes and supposedly Pieksy Jas is they pick up the flavor of what they are cooked with, they are tender, have a creamy texture and pick up flavors well. The gal that bought them finally got a couple to germinate but said the seedcoat itself developed some mold so I swished a few around in vinegar, rinsed and now waiting to see if I can get any to germinate, I'll keep trying as she sent me a lot of beans. This is a picture of freshly shelled DRY Gigandes seed, they did keep shrinking some in the next month or two. The ones in the picture are some of the smaller Gigandes I have in my cooking jar but next to some of the bigger Pieky Jas sent they look like midgets so, I'm thinking Pieky Jas is the bigger of the two varieties. Pieky Jas on the right. I'll come back to this thread as things develop. Annette

I thought there were more but only one germinated in that batch, more on now. The one and lonely is in a pot, now I'm waiting to see if cotyledons appear or not, fingers crossed they don't. If they do what I have is probably a lima bean. From the information I've read Piekny Jas is a runner. It was brought to my attention the seed I have look like limas. It's a wait and see.

I'm waiting to see if cotyledons appear or not, fingers crossed they don't. Really? Runner beans don't have cotyledons? What do they do, just emerge with true leaves? I have never heard this. Update - I Googled it and discovered that the cotyledons stay below ground with runner beans so I learned something new today. I never really thought about it but it is the same way with corn and peas.

I've tried several times to germinate what I have, first time they rotted, second time (picture) one germinated (bottom right hand corner). The third time I got lucky, this time I took a few beans and dunked them in peroxide, rinsed, placed on a dampened paper towel with a drop of liquid fertilize on a pie plate, enclosed in a clear plastic bag. Each day I turned the beans over a couple of times, a light mist in the bag before closing to keep the humidly up. 5 days later they started to germinate I now have 7 potted up and sitting on a heat mat. Now, after all this, do I have the right ones, is it a lima or a runner, if it turns out to be a lima it's not the one we're looking for. Now it's a wait and see if cotyledons appear. At least we will be getting the real deal from Andrey. Annette

It's going to be another week or so before mine arrive, but I'm really looking forward to them. The ones I'm growing right now have turned out to be Limas. I was really hoping I wasn't going to see those cotyledons but there they are .

spike ,doing the happy dance!!! Put the PJ's from Andrey in damp paper towel on the 27th. this morning when I peeked they have germinated so into pots they go. This is what happens when you have fresh viable seed to work with, I'm finding the size of these to be comparable to Gigandes. Annette

if you have really hard water it will take even longer. No kidding! The water here is very hard. I've taken to running all bean soaking and cooking water through a Britta filter, first.

Damn, I hit the wrong key. One more time....The traveling PJ's have almost completed a round trip . The gal I was looking for these in England received them this morning, mailed on the 8th., they just took 3 days. Thanks to Andrey and Spike for all your efforts we now have a very happy gal in the U.K. as well as a few happy campers this side of the pond. The three I planted are growing gang busters the fake PJ's (Limas) are too, not that I want them, just couldn't make myself throw them out. Annette
