If anyone is growing this one and is willing to share a few seeds, I have quite a few varieties to do a trade.

That's a big white bean! I used to have it, but I sent it to an Idig member back around 2009. They was suppose to send seed back to me, but I lost contact with them. I never got a chance to grow it. Sorry.

That bean comes from Poland if I'm not mistaken. It's one of The biggest beans I ever saw. It makes a butterbeans look like a pea.

Never even heard of that one. Sorry. It is a Polish bean. Translates into Handsome Johnny. Did I sound really smart there for a sec? I know this cause I too had never heard of it and looked it up as I am addicted to beans. No idea where to buy them. Could not find a source.

From what I have gathered the only place you can buy this variety is at a Polish Deli, we don't have one here. I was hoping someone here had bought them and grown some.

I don't want to say we have a "local" Polish Deli but I can get to one. I have a message in to them to see if they either have or can get the bean seed. Cross your fingers!!

Fingers crossed someone might have them, I'm actually looking for this variety for someone who helped me out when I was looking for a particular almost impossible to find bean variety. After years of searching I found someone in the UK who went to the trouble of finding a few for me. I just want to return the favor as well as keeping a few for myself. We beanaholics have to stick together . Annette

As some of you know, they've been tracked down. I'm getting some from a gal down island from me but she wants to do a germination test before she sends them. Surfing the web I found a little history on them... www.fondazioneslowfood.com/en/ark-of-taste-slow-food/dunajec-valley-piekny-jas-beans/Reading this confirms it is a runner bean (P. Coccineus). Runners are very promiscuous, they cross easily with other runners so if you want to keep your seed pure only grow one variety per year and hope your neighbor is not growing runners or if they are hope they're growing the same one. Bumblebees are the little culprits. Looks like I won't be growing my favorite Aeron Purple Star this year. Annette

aftermidnight, I have lots of honeybees and bumblebees. They used to worry the $##+ out of me when I was beating metal. They smell the coal I guess and would just swarm around my head. You don't dare kill one cause 10 will take its place. I have to be careful cause I used to be allergic, but the last time I got stung, I did just fine taking a Benadryl. I guess I'd better decide if I grow these or gigantes. I guess pienky jas are more important, so they go first.

Let me just say that the runner beans I planned on planting will just have to wait. The trouble we have had getting these piekny jas, they get priority! Andrey told me I should have them in 2 to 3 weeks so the count down begins.

I don't know anything about these beans but when I grew the scarlet runner beans they also attracted hummingbirds. I wonder what color the flowers are on these piekny jas beans will be?

Okay I am in a fit of giggles. Way faster than I expected I received a very expensive package in the mail with one >,< ONE package of soup beans. Though marked Piekny Jas I have grown larger lima beans. link I still have one package supposedly on the way. Time will tell. But sorry I am giving up. NO I DO NOT WANT YOU TO SEND ME MONEY!! But the cost of this adventure has gotten just plain silly and I surrender. I do hopefully have one more package on the way and fingers crossed it arrives and is what we are looking for.

Ohhh, that is so disappointing, do you think they might be something else or just smaller seed than you thought they'd be? Sometimes grown in bulk for culinary use they aren't selected for size, just taste. On the other hand, I bit the bullet and ordered a packet of Buenos Aires Roja from the Secret Seed Cartel in France, the only place I could find selling them. I paid $10US including shipping. They took about 3 weeks to get here, hey I've had things taken longer in Canada. Lookee what I got, a huge packet of seed, I was expecting and hoping for at least 2-3 dozen seeds and they gave me 90. And look what they sent me as a freebee, Pawnee, one of Russ Crow's introductions. Back to Piekny Jas, the gal who found them up here sent me a couple of pictures, the first with a variety of coinage showing the variation in bean size. The second pic she selected some of the bigger ones with a penny for comparison. Hope I got all this pics in the right place, if not 'll be back. Annette

Not sure if you can really tell but the beans I have will not actually cover a penny. The ones I got are actually pretty plump. I think I have the wrong thing BUT there is still hope. I do have another package on the way I hope!

spike , aftermidnight , I looked at the ones imp provided a link to, but when it said medium sized bean, that threw up a red flag for me. The ones I had looked almost like the Gigantes bean I just received. The picture of the ones Annette posted is what mine looked like. Of course I'm going on a memory from several years back.

That is why I asked if those could be the ones, the description seemed off possibly. Though some people's descriptions can vary, why I love the pictures above with a common item (coins) to show sizes. Sorry my search didn't work so well after all.

I'm going strictly off memory. I might be the one that wrong. Glad to have your help in the search.

That sounds really good. Baked lima beans are very popular in my area but they are just regular size lima beans of course.

Sounds good, except I would probably use more garlic, LOL, and I wouldn't salt the beans until adding the tomatoes or at table. I find adding salt too early can make some beans tough. Your MMV.

@imp,
Yes, I agree about the salt. We always season our beans as a last step. I learned that from Justin Wilson. I sure miss watching that ol' fellow. Some of the cooks on TV these days are horrid. My Sister likes some of those goofball cooks. She's always watching them make some type of garbage. She was watching RR make something and I told her "She can't cook, if she was cooking for $##t, she wouldn't get a smell."
